Hey everyone I hope everyone is having a decent day.
Well today is my quit day and so far so good, (kinda helps I have pneumonia) I started chantix five days ago and today seems to be going ok.... I missed my last quit date of 9/1... but this one I think I know I am going to give it my best shot to stop for good.lmao I got up at 9:30 and it is 11:56 and I am so proud of myself right now...
Has anyone else ever used chantix? Did it work? and after you quit how long do you have to take it?
I thought I read after a couple days the nicotine which is what your addicted to is out of your body ?
Chantix really doesn't give me many side effects, so far anyway it is only day 5..
Have a great day enjoy the weekend it is gorgeous here !!!!

  • My brother used it and has been smoker free for over 4 yrs now. Wishing you success :)
L1 - S2 "gone" useless in 1 way or another. DDD. RA. Bone Spurs. Tons of nerve damage/issues. Stenosis. Both knees replaced. 50 yrs old. I had a great fall (hence my user name) at age 41 and it has been a domino effect every since.
  • One is still smoke free 2 years later, unfortunately my son started smoking again 1 year later. Both my wife and I quit cold turkey in 2009 and are still smoke free!!.

  • Hi; and i'm currently taking "chantix".
And yes it is working for me this time.. But i believe the biggest thing with quitting smoking is you have to wanna quit, and set your mind to it, When you feel the urge, dont let it take over.

Right now i'm 10 days smoke free, and it is getting easier every day, except if you are feeling alot of stress. Which i felt yesterday, when i received the mail. {my ex trying more cr@p}. But i didnt slip, stuck to being smoke free.

I did try chantix also 3 years ago, but didnt work that time.

So hang in there, and set a date, and when you get up in the morn. You just have to set your mind to it.

    Best of luck to ya.
  • It has been 2 days smoke free, yesterday was good today has been kind of hard , but my pain is worse today I just keep telling myself I am not gonna lose this time. I don't need it... Thanks for all the support
  • way to go !!!!!!!! :D

Sorry I am on here complaining and no one wants to hear that...
Have a great day guys :)
    Sheryl
  • Day 4 - 7 is considered the hell days - your body is now almost out of the drug and it knows it, so it is acting up trying to gt you to give in - DON'T!!!! :)

  • Thank You so much for the link and letting me know that I am not crazy and it is harder during this period.. I was thinking it should get easier, but man it isn't only two more days and day seven will be over and it will get easier right :):)
I feel like a big baby I wanna cry please some one take it away lol ... I know push through and I am going to I do not need to smoke thats what I keep telling myself, I keep sweating like a pig ewww
    Have a great day
  • Sweating like a pig is good. You are detoxing. Drink lots of water. Then drink even more. Not coffee or soda since the caffeine won't help. You can add some light flavoring to the water to get a break. like smart water, propel kinda stuff. You want to be drinking and peeing all day. It'll lower the sweating as you'll be flushing out through your bladder instead of your pores. Think 1-2 gallons a day, yeah, gallons!

Change your diet around a little too. Something a little healthier. Make some snacks from fruit and veggies. Munch on those when you get urges to smoke. It helps with urge and detox process. Keeps your hands busy.

I found with Chantix that the urge went away. Smoking was actually not interesting. Until you detox the nicotine though you have an addiction dependance on the chemical.

  • Vegetables are a good idea I am about Jolly rancher sick ... Gallons ugggghh lol I have increased my water intake but not that much , I already pee every hour... But if it will help Gallons it is .. thanks for the advice it keeps me going strong.
That is what I found with the chantix to I just didn't want to smoke. I am still only taking .5 mg a day , because I didn't see a reason to increase it like they say if I am already not smoking with just the .5mg dose. So far so good, with that.
Urrr today is dragging thank god I am still not breathing well from the pneumonia, or it might of been harder to hold out, but I am determined. Thanks to all you guys and my husband who is dying and said last night "screw it I can't smoke in the house, can't come in smelling like smoke, might as well quit to " lol I said hey whatever it takes.
    Thanks everyone
    Sheryl
  • Just hang in there, and you can do it.
Yups its tough, i'm at day 13 right now, and the urge to smoke is gone.
Tho i still think about it, and would like to have a smoke, its not bothering me anymore not lighting up.

I do like Z06 says and drink alot of water during the day. I put those crystel-lite flavor paks in the bottle of water to add to the taste.

Just keep your mind set on your goal.

  • Sheryl,

Yes at least a gallon if you can. Don't measure in 8oz glasses and don't sip all day. More like 20oz bottles and take gulps. Like playing the hydration game when you are outdoors in high heat. Always drinking, always peeing, means you're not on our way to the ER for heat stroke. Try it with that approach maybe. But yeah up your water. If you're only at 16oz or so a day you are not even close.

    Jim,

Yeah crystal light is fine. Any flavor packets that are not high in sugar. Watch out for the ones that have 30+ grams of carbs from sugar. Drinking that much water with lots of sugar will make you feel horrible. That's why I will not just drink gatorade like products on hot days to hydrate. Eloctrloytes is nice to have. All the sugar, not so much.

For both of you. Might also look at some of the detox kits you find at health stores. Not colon cleanse, full body. If you can afford it get one of the 30-day kits. Doesn't have to be anything crazy. Do that and with the fluids and an attempt at a better diet. You clean up your system. Then a good multivitamin every day with a meal. The earlier ones preferably. Also don't start playing skip meals to avoid the weight gain possibility. You want to eat more meals actually. Portion size and not too heavy on fats and carbs. More on proteins.

Not trying to lecture you on health. But those changes and do some sort of exercise. Walk is fine, just vary the pace. You'll be amazed how much crap comes out of your lungs, how your energy level starts to pick up. It is all maintainable and gets better. You'll start to taste stuff and really like some foods and want to eat them slower cause you actually can taste them now!!! Awesome stuff. I love eating :-)

You'd be amazed at how much you can transform and help yourself with some of those real basics. That includes your chronic pain, back and neck issues, etc...

PS: No it will not glue those screws back down Sheryl, sorry. Even duct tape isn't going to help here. lol.

    Graham
  • Awesome... Day 13, I can not wait to get there. I am Day 6 and it has been a little tough these last couple someone ( I think Humpty) said day 4-7 are the worst. I sure hope cuz that means tomorrow is my last worst day ...:) Graham has alot of good advice gonna try to follow as much as I can because of this freaking back and not working I have gained 30 pounds, probably more since I am too afraid to look at a scale again... Well you are day 14 now and day 15 isn't even 24 hours away.... Awesome job ...
Thanks for all the advice and helping me through this tough but awesome road in my life
    Sheryl
  • Ya not many people are willing to duct tape or put lock tight on those freaking screws. Looking like a whole chisel out taking bone from hip and bigger screws is the only way to go ... Urr I might ask them for the old screws though, they are titanium and I hear that is a expensive metal so I am thinking I could take them to a scrap yard and get a little money out of them lol..:) My son told me that I could get money if I scrapped them, he is a dork.
Anyway, You have a lot of great advice ans I am definitely going to use it. I need all I can get, I have a 30 pound weight gain since May when I stopped working.
I need to exercise ( walk ) that is about all I can do, it kills me and I have to take a break every ten minutes but I do feel better when I do it.
Already went and bought the zero calorie water flavor... Going to GNC later today, That is a good Idea to cleanse the whole body, I saw Doc OZ talking about it on tv the other day..
    Thanks Graham a bunch

You are such an encouragement sharing this struggle. I think it's one of the most difficult to quit!

I was a bear for awhile when I quit. It had such a hold. But we overcome!

Your post also informative and encouraging for the general...take better care of self. I've been slipping in a few areas and you remotivated me!

Hope today is especially kind to you, Sheryl!

  • Sheryl,

Since the doctors all but refuse to remove screws unless there is some total failure. I don't understand why they don't Loctite them down. Oh well, that whole issue you have with that. This stopping smoking for you is a big deal.

Keep the old screws. They're not worth that much recycled since there isn't enough material. Much more entertaining as a coffee table ornament :-)

The 30lbs could come from a lot of reasons. Not working, bad/more eating habits, spending too much time on the couch watching soaps and surfing the web ;-) , medications, etc... If you're on nerve pain pills (lyrica, neurontin, etc) then expect weight gain. So trying to quit smoking, eat better, do some exercise, and loose weight. Honestly I suggest you not worry about weight right now. You'll just yo-yo it or do some foolish crash diet. That's pointless. If you stop smoking and work on better diet and some exercise. The weight will balance out on it's own to some place. Then when you get your loose screws glued down. You can focus on more changes. You can't fix it all at once.

Walking 10 minutes then break. No problem. Can work with that. So walk 2 mins at a reasonable pace. 1 min as quick as you can. 3 cycles. That's 9 minutes. If you have a heart monitor then just see if you are even getting into your cardio zone at all. You're a nurse, check your pulse... :-) If your monitor has a pedometer see how far you got. So now you have a basic routine. Can you do that twice a day? three times? Don't go crazy. But do it more than once if possible. Right before or after a meal. Since even a small amount of cardio will bump your metabolism. Doing it routinely gets your body to increase more often and for longer. That weight will go away to wherever your body feels it needs the balance.

Since you have broken hardware and have to be careful about bending and twisting especially. It makes doing core work more of a challenge, but not impossible. Their are very basic core exercises you can do on the floor without jerking your back around. Since you're a mom. Think pelvic flooring and keggles and breathing. They all take that internal core structure and utilize it.

  • How are you holding up these days?

  • Day 8 and going strong... have the urges but talk myself through them by saying , this only last a min... I don't need one... My kids have seen me talking to myself saying this and ask me if I am ok ..lol I told them oh talking myself through this and they say Good job mom ...
I really feel like I am done smoking, even stopped taking the chantix since I never went past the step one. (just a half a milligram a day) when you are to work up to 2 milligrams a day. I don't think it was doing anything for me in the beginning it helped because the cig tasted horrible which is why I stopped smoking, but now it has been 8 days and I would be stupid to start again.
How are you doing??? It is very yucky here with rain and dampness which means oh how the pain increases.
Thank you Humpty for asking and caring it means alot
    Have a great great day

The weather here was awful yesterday, the wind was blowing so hard it looked like it was raining side ways lol ....My joints are not fond of it either and I spent the day in the recliner with a blanket .. Today is better still windy but the sun peeks out once in a while..
    Have a great day

I get to ask him what his plan is since the 2nd opinion I saw last week said the stimulator wouldn't work and whoever gave me it is crazy lol ... outta be a interesting appointment

Thanks for helping mew through day 9 you are the best
    Have a great day
  • hey, where you go.
How are ya doing on the road to being smoke-free.
    Hopefully your fine.

I'm at day 20, now, and the stress i'm feeling here with everything is really taking a toll on me, but some how i have still stuck to not smoking, and i plan on winning this lil battle.

Best of luck to ya, and dont give up.
  • Oh I am here, miserable yet here . Day 13 begins for me. Yesterday was a really hard day , I have noticed that when the pain is worse the not smoking is harder. I think I just want a hit then someone will finally agree to give me a hit after begging like a crack head and I am like eww no , I don't want it. My husband and mother think I am crazy. I have not had any nicotine at all in 13 days no patches, no gum and even quit the chantix a week or so ago.
Jim you are doing great day 20..!!!!! I think because we both have that mind set that we are going to beat this battle. We are both going to be fine, I know we are. Stress is harder lately for you ?? Anything I can do? I have to say I think it is in the air, I am finally realizing I am just screwed nothing I can do, accept it you know. Depressed alot cried the other day all day I mean all day for unknown reasons, when my kids or husband would start to say something to me my eyes would start watering and I would say plz don't talk to me, lmao they would say I just asked where the dog food was ... I am a hot mess as they say. I hope you are better then me... GO JIM YOU ARE KICKING SMOKING'S BUTT AND I KNOW YOU WILL BEAT IT. Very proud of you and anyone else who fights the fight :)
Have a wonderful day, it is a cuddle up on the couch with my grand daughter kind of day here , watching movies with the wet dreary weather and some hot chocolate and marshmallows sounds good.
    Sheryl
  • You quit taking Chantix a week or so ago but you're only on day 13? What? You're making it really hard on yourself. You take the Chantix for at least 1 week before your quit date. Those low dose ones you did. Then on your quit day is the first day you take the 1 pill. I think week 2 you up it or not depending on how you feel. You should take it for the 30 days of the RX. 1 week on low dose then 3 weeks on the normal 1 pill dose. Then if you want off stop taking it. After you get past the nicotine withdrawal and stuff.

Just what did you do exactly? Just curious.

  • Being a nurse I tend to diagnosis myself and family, decide how much they need of something what the NyQuil isn't working take another sip , my kids have heard that plenty. We ( I am ) are the worst patients, believe me... lol ..
I started the chantix like it said made my quit date for a week after, which would of been Monday the 10th By day 4 of taking it I was unable to finish a cig, so I said well I am done, they cost 10 dollars a pack here and I am a weirdo and won't smoke one that has already been half smoked, anyway I stopped continued taking the pills for a couple more days like they said to, but never went over a half a milligram, because I figured if that was working for me and I already quit no reason to go up anymore. Took it for a couple more days and thought WTH I am taking a .5 mg when I am suppose to be at 2 mg a day, I do not need them so I stopped taking them thinking if it got too bad I would just start taking them again.
It just really made me realize how much it is mind over matter especially after the first few days of no nicotine when it is out of your system.
I have not taken a Chantix since although I am pushing the drug like crazy on my mom and husband.
I last smoke a cig Oct 7th at bedtime, today is day 14...:) Never did I think I would make it here, and honestly I think about it but it last for a split second and to me with my failed fusion, recent pneumonia it is not worth it, (I think the pneumonia helped a lot with the quitting)
Feeling like you are suffocating is horrible.
I never want to feel like that again, I can not imagine having emphysema or COPD, those would be horrible deaths and my Fathers mother died of Emphysema my uncle currently is struggling with it, wearing his oxygen smoking his cig lol , nope not me.
I did what you and everyone else said to water out the ying yang, exercise ( as much as you can) even if it is just welp get up and walk around the house for 5 min at a slow steady pace it is something.
You guys here helped me the most tho I think whenever it was really bad I would get on here and read all the posts and think I know I can do it.
    Thanks for everything....
    Sheryl
  • Sheryl,

It is awesome and at 2 weeks out you are done with the drug addiction physically. For the most part. If you did a urine/blood test you would pass. Now it's that mental game, that little chemical in your brain associating pleasure with it, the physical exercise of reaching for, holding, and smoking the cigarette. Find busy work for your fingers and do something else when the urge strikes. You don't have to just chew gum. Get a coffee stirrer and just twizzle it in your fingers when you get the urge. Use a pencil. Don't mimic the smoking act. Just keep those little digits occupied. Think of the coordination needed to move it between fingers. Think of something other than smoking, anything.

Now on the other parts. Nurses are my favorite people in hospitals and doctors offices. You gals really do look out for us patients. You most certainly are the worst at taking your own advice on medical things. So listen up! Stop it, damnit woman! ;-) Tell your hubby, mom, whoever, the proper approach to the Chantix. Definitely add the caution of 2 pills/day might be over the top. This seems to be where people get in trouble with it and the bad side effects. Have someone monitor that person. Do the dose right. If they still do that blister pack (kinda like how Medrol works). Then there is 30 or so days in the pack. First row is white pills for week 1, the .5mg. Next is the blue, i think. that are the 1mg. Take those for 3 weeks. Regardless of if you think they should or not (turn the i don't listen nurse mode off here :-). Tell them not to dose up to 2x unless they are really struggling. If they do keep an eye on them on 2x. Personality changes happen here and other things.

Once they get through that first month. They should be able to do it if they really want to. At that point it really is mind over matter. Some doctors have their patients take 1x/day for 90 days! At least when it first came out. My doc told me after 30 days I could stop if I really didn't feel the need. I didn't. Doing the whole month cuts down on those urges and the fighting them off. Many that you probably went through. Some people have better will power to fight. Doing the 30 days should help increase the odds of success.

Now I don't need to remind you of why you are doing this. You listed the reasons. Breathing is fun isn't it? ;-) And yes I watched my father-in-law whither away and die of this sickness/madness, grasping for oxygen tanks. I watched my wife and her sisters and my mother-in-law watch it. That was even worse. All those people who care about you, they get to watch it if you don't stop. So just as a reminder. Your kids get to watch you die slowly. Really hits home doesn't it? Took me a long time to smarten up, too damned long. But I did and I stopped and got my wife to stop. For all the reasons above and more.

Keep it up girl you can stop. It is that big of a deal.

    Graham
  • The good news is most if not all of the nicotine is GONE!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Now the fight is you & your mind - which can be just as rough to fight.

Keep telling yourself "my body does not want/need this". My mind does and I WILL control my mind :)
