My throat seems to be choking off...........

Hello Friends,

I hope you are hanging in there.

I have noticed a harder time swallowing this past month or two.
I thought it was my imagination at first. It continues to be a problem and is getting a bit worse. Today was the worst so far. My upper back is tighter than usual although it has been giving me problems along with my cervical and back. Any help, here? The only way I can explain it is coming through from my neck area and slicing down a bit to my back.

I am trying to hang in there til i can get elsewhere for more consults.

  • I know we chatted before but I am sorry I cant remember... Have you had surgery? What is your diagnosis?

Another surgery in the near future. I am 26 years old.

Current Meds- Norco 7.5/325, Cymbalta 60mg, Gabapentin, Adderall 20mg
  • Hi Donna,

You're right and hope you are hanging in there.

I apolgise for not putting that in my message. I am doing lousy again and sorry about the complaints. i know many are doing as bad or worse than I may be.

I am still pre surgery. I am trying to stick it out til my husband gets a little better. He broke his tailbone the end of June and just had an ablation and pacemaker inserted last year. He has many other ailments and I am his caregiver.

I fractured my neck in the late 90's. In 2007 I had more problems and have done okay til now again. In June, I was diagnosed with a C6 and C7 radiculopathy due to foraminal stenosis and spondylosis. I also have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis and CTD and DDD. I do have 4 bulging discs in my lumbar area as well. I have also had a recent accident involving my sac/hip area. The xrays say only bruising. I have more info but think that would tell enough without telling a more lengthy story.

    Best Regards,

    Gracie

  • Sorry to add that I have 4 bone spurs. The pain is getting worse everyday again. It is in my neck and thoracic area and in my legs, arms and feet instead of my right arm only. Not quite as excruciating though but on more meds and cymbalta again. Help. please.

  • Howdy Gracie,

Sorry to hear you are having 'throat' issues. I too didn't know if you had surgery, so thank you for tossing in more details. :)

Are you seeing a spine specialist for your neck concerns? Without surgery, not sure what to tell you or even guess. Mine went to crap just over 4 months post op, but that I found of course later that my fusion failed and destabilized the whole ancha-lada as they say! (G)

Another option (which is what I did initially) is to get with an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat specialist) to see what is going on. You could have an infection, a swollen cord...one never knows. I hope you have answers soon - listen to your body woman!!

Bumping up the prayers for you! Good luck and well wishes for tomorrow.

  • Gracie,

Hopefully it turns out to be nothing bad, but the ENT is probably the best way to go at this point. Mine started with voice changes, choke outs and the feeling of a thumb pushing on the side of my throat - very annoying to say the least!

Fingers crossed for ya! :) Thanks very much for the wishes. *HUG*

  • Heh Brenda,

I probably shouldn't bother you with all that you are facing tomorrow. If you don't read this til you are healing and resting up, that's okay!

I do have the feeling of a thumb pushing on the side of my throat . It also feels like my vein there is taut and bulging out. That is along with the other arm pain, neck pain, etc.

    Gracie

    Anyone else though,

    Like you
  • Howdy Gracie,

Naw, not bothering me at all!! (G) Hopefully an ENT will shed some light on what might be going on. Mine was able to zero in on mine pretty fast - though at that time he thought the "crack" would self resolve. It didn't, and as it turned out, it was my fusion failing. Oh well...

Please let us know how it goes Gracie. *HUGZ*

  • I think Brenda's suggestion of an ENT is a good one. I had seen an ENT and Gastroenterologist before I had my surgery because of issues swallowing. I saw the ENT after my surgery because of voice issues and swallowing wasn't healing as quickly as I thought it would. Turned out one of my vocal chords was affected by the surgery but just slow in healing - it's almost normal now (couple more months should be normal).

    Best of luck.

...your throat issue. Sounds like can be kind of scarey.
Not sure if I missed it..but wanted to say re' meds.. sometimes you can be taking meds for a while and then have allergic reactions.

That has happened to me on two occassions. And then also, like doc tried Lyrica for me and my throat closed up immediately. My voice was like I inhaled helium...so that and another med did same thing.

I used to doubt myself..or like...is this really happening? or I'm anxious?..Sometimes it's the littlest thing you can tell doc about a symptome that makes his eyes light up with...let's try....

    Good luck to you!

  • Hope it continues to get batter for you Karen.

Thanks Savage. I know many things can be because of meds. How are you doing?

I just am feeling deep down that this is from my neck problems. I did make an appt with a ENT for next Thursday afternoon. They come to town once a month.

I hate this waiting game but do not want to forge ahead until i am sure of what i am doing. I want a couple more consults and for my hubby to heal up a little more. Hope that works.

    Gracie
  • This is getting to me.

One week to see the ENT.
  • Howdy Gracie,

I'm back, just a bit slower on the posts presently. (G) There's a phrase that I absolutely HATED when I was young, but found so bloody true as time went on!

Patience is a virtue!!! I know, sucks, but it is true. Just think of our bothers and sisters in countries that have to wait months to see a doctors vs us days or weeks!! Right??

No surgery, so hopefully it isn't any thing bad. I keep sending you positive thoughts woman!! *HUG*

  • A week to see an ENT? Can you find another who can see you sooner or at least get on their cancellation list! I know the feeling you are talking about and it is very scary! Have you talked to a neurosurgeon yet about your pain and bone spurs? If it is bad, he can get you in fairly quickly. Is your husband to the point now that he can help you get thru a surgery? I definitely needed help for about 6 days. I was in the hospital for 3 and then slept much of the next several days. I'm 6 weeks post op now and so thankful I had it done. Some muscle spasms yet and some arms tingling. The TENS unit helps with all that.

Hoping you will find a doctor to see you soon!

    Sandy
  • Hi Brenda,

You're right I guess. I am just a tad nervous as I still have had only one consult and am playing a waiting game still. Not sure what will happen. I am setting up consults for December 1 and if anything else warrants it, will call the neuro here,(2hrs away) stat!

You are unbelieveable woman! Rest and heal. lol. Glad to see you feel up to posting.

    Heh there,Sandy,

That is the disadvantage to living in a quiet area. We don't even have an ENT here. He comes from the big city once a month as do many of our specialists. Not up to a two - three hour drive to go there. Time is passing. So glad you are doing better! DH had two more appts today, with the PD and one other. We are getting there. Hopefully, I can hang in there for a while longer. This is getting a little nerve wracking though.

I hope to be on the flip side of all of this soon....whatever direction it takes. You guys are all keeping me grounded.
    Big Hugs,
    Gracie
  • 2 Hours away?!?! Guess I'd be in a bit of a bind...wow!!! Hopefully you will know soon what the heck is going on. I know with mine, it started (his findings) validating what was going on with me. Fingers crossed for ya woman!!! *HUGZ*

  • Thanks, Brenda.

Hope you have a good day today.

I am already feeling my throat and it seems to be affecting my chest. Did you get that? I hope you got rid of most of it! Heal well!

  • Sorry to hear you feel like being choked! Please make sure you're alright with any throat pain and chest pain and get checked out at your ER. Charry

  • Hi Charry,

Thank you. I do not know what to think. I do not though, have a sore throat like a strept throat. It is more like my windpipe is closing up. The chest pain was checked on August 8th with a cardiovascular stress test and HT muscle Image Spec and I was given up to that point clearance for neurosurgery. Up to this point nothing seemed wrong with my heart or reason for the chest pain. I believe it to be from my neck and back and am hoping to find out more soon. It is nervewracking to not know. I wish I were able to go to Mayo or somewhere where they would check EVERYTHING OUT. I live in a very rural area and am trying to make it to the end of Novemeber and can go to the big city for consults and exams. Otherwise, I have seen a neuro 100 miles away and if i have to, can call him back right away. I hate this waiting game. Hope you are doing okay. Do you get any chest issues because of your back or neck or thoracic areas?

    Gracie
  • BTW, right now it feels like a bullet has gone through my front and out the back. The other symptoms are with me too. My back is very taut and my throat more like "tight."

  • The only time my chest came into the choke out is just that...when I was choking or almost tossing. My choke outs would graduate to a gagging reflex type response before it would back down.

So far so good, and fingers crossed that the choke outs are now history with all those bad boyz locked down but good!! :)

  • Just wondering about if you're on pain meds and nerve pain meds? I take Cymbalta for nerve pain and Lyrica for the neck pain. I do have cervical issues but have neck pain and arm especially elbow pain and sometimes my neck will get like "caught" and bring me down in pain but don't have any thoracic issues where I have throat tightness or chest pain.

I hope you see the Surgeon soon about this and if it were me I would still get cleared by ER as sometimes pain can move up a surgery faster if you have history of seeing the ER and sending the report to the Neuro Dr. to let him know how much pain you're having. If he said to call why not call him? TC. Charry

  • Hi and thanks for your well wishes.

I have tried both lyrica and neurontin years ago but never stayed on them. I had been on cymbalta for several years and went off of it and some other meds due to a neurologist thinking it would help my insomnia. I seemed to be managing okay, and my last epsisode of severe radiculopathy was in 2007. I'll never know if or why it came back or if it was due to going off the cymbalta. I am BACK ON IT NOW. It is still early to tell if it will help enough to keep from having surgery. My arm pain is a little better but now am dealing with new and other debilitating symptoms. I am having a hard time typing again but miss all the help one can get here. I never had thoracic issues til after the deer/car accident. No broken bones but something more is going on again. I hope to get a full MRI scan in Florida in November if I can wait it out. I can have surgery within 2 weeks but really thought i should get a couple more opinbions if i can tuff it out. It depends on this arm pain. If it gets like a month or so ago, I'm headed staright to the ER or whatever else.

    How are you ?

  • Do you live in Florida? I'm in Altamonte about 15 minutes north of Orlando. Can you do a self referral with your insurance? If so, once you have your MRI, go see an ortho and neuro - have them look at the MRI and see what they say.

    Sandy
  • I am an hour north of Tampa and winter there. I do have one referral from the neuro here for Tampa and will ask my PD for others. I am also checking out USF. I am counting the time down here til we leave. Not looking forward to the drive though. It would be a much easier recovery(if I can find a good doctor)there with good weather, no stairs and no hills or snow. Also rehab is close too. Rehab here would be about an hour away.
