Neck Surgery that went wrong

My husband just had surgery for a herniated disk in his neck. The surgeon was going to fuse c4,c5,c6. My husband did all the nerve tests prior to surgery and he was ready to go. When the surgeon placed the metal plate in his neck, supposedly a nerve went flat. I guess that means he lost mobility to move his arms and legs. So we were told that when he took the plate out, the nerve came back. The surgeon told my husband that this had never happened to him and all of the doctors couldn't understand it neither. My husband is still back to his same health prior to surgery and we meet with his doctor on Tuesday. My question, has anyone ever heard of this happening, and should my husband really go through a second surgery? what are his options?
