Back Surgery

Hi I am 39 and need to have an L5 S1 Fusion and dicsectomy, My question is my doctor wants to use Infuse for my fusion surgery- does this mean I don not need to have bone taken from my hip? Also when they say six months recovery, do they mean off work for six months???? :??

  • They use a special substance to help the vertebrae to fuse together. I didn't have any bone taken from my hip and I was fused before my 6 month follow up appointment with the surgeon.

Recovery time is different for everyone. It'll depend on what type of work you do, your age and fitness.

There will be bending-lifting-twisting restrictions in place for several months and your surgeon will guide you on this.

  • Hi

Thanks, I am 38 years old , I am a teacher and I used to be very fit before the back pain, now I have gained 30lbs. I have had a microdisectomy in 2009 and i reinjured the disc and now have ddd. I am just apprehensive about the surgery as the recovery time seems so long! When they say six months do they mean six months away from work, or just six months with restrictions on bending lifting etc???
  • It depends on the surgeon and what he feels you need for recovery.

I had l4-s1 PLIF & was back to work at 11 weeks post op (still taking pain mends but not until the afternoon). At 6 months I was feeling much better and only taking pain meds/muscle relaxer to sleep occationally.

I was not given a brace but had a turtle shell from before my surgery. When I went back to work if I had a day where I was on my feet all day I would use my brace. I also used it when I started walking- it helped me tremendously.

    Good luck,
