I have been to a physical therapist about 10 years ago and told him I was getting neck pain. He advised me to exercise regularly and do a few neck exercises.
The pain never went away. It's chronic, and although I get relief alot of the time, it bothers me a lot every single day. I actually have been having some neck spasms that have gotten to be more often over time. It happened gradually but now I people can tell I have neck pain just be looking at me because of the neck spasms that are visible.
I wanted to find out more about the problem, and I went to see a family doctor. He did x-rays and said that he could not see anything on the x-rays that concerned him. He prescribed me pennsaid and I tried it and it didn't do anything to solve the problem. I went back to the doctor and requested that I get to see a physical therapist. He told me it's difficult to get insurance to pay for something like that, and that I would need to get an MRI done first. He wanted me to try some basic neck exercises but it's not working. I get a massage once a week and exercise regularly and the pain gets relief for a bit but it always persists. The doctor thinks it's probably inflammation. My posture may be also affecting the neck pain I have been told. However my father has a major problem with his neck and it never got better. In fact, he can't really do much physical activity thus it's very possible a lot of this problem is simply genetics. His neck is in very bad shape and he has had severe issues with it since his 30s I'm sure of, including severe pain and violent neck spasms.
I had a few questions for you guys and I'd appreciate feedback.
1. What do I need to tell a doctor to get him to do an MRI (I have a good insurance plan blue cross ppo). Any tips on what I could tell him that could help get this done soon. How do I best get through the "red tape" to get done what I need to get done.
2. What's better - a physical therapist or a chiropractic for this type of issue, or other?
3. Any other tips. Any good anti-inflamatory drugs with few side affects you guys might recommend that I could try? Alieve doesn't help at all.
4. My doc told me not to do deep tissue massages because it can damage the spine. Is this good advice?
Thanks in advance. All help is greatly appreciated.
I hope you all have a great day toay!
