I am post Anterior Cervicial (a few years ago), post revision posterior cervical fusion (less than a year ago), and currently dealing with a post-op infection and inflammation. When the pain is at its worst, my neck spasms, then swells, and it creeps up the back of my fusion site and up the sides of my face and goes into a severe headache. The headaches - and that's an understatement to call them that - feel like I have a broken skull that is tender to the touch and my eyes feel they are being pushed out by ice picks.
I take muscle relaxants, but every pain mediciation I have taken (and my pain doc has taken me through the list) has caused the headache portion of the pain to intenstify to the point my family wants me to go to the hospital. Last night, my neck was so painful that I was crying, though I did not have the headache portion yet. I succumbed and took a dose of dilaudid. This morning, the pain was so horrific it woke me up and I feel like my head has been crushed and my eyes pushed out.
Has anyone else had similar reactions to pain medicine and, if so, what did you do? I feel like I am going to have to just start sucking it up when the bad pain in my neck and shoulders starts. Besides ice and heat and tens unit, it seems I have no other way to handle it. Is this the part where I become one of those people who is just lying very still in their bed and crying?
