Back Pain Friends Needed - Update

Hi Friends,

Thank you for all your sweet posts. I didn't know where to actually post this, but I went to my former surgeon in Dallas, TX. He looked at my MRI and CatScan and said surgery/fusion is the only thing he can do for my pain. I already had T11,12 and L1,2 fused in 05. That fusion was a success and I have no pain in that area. He is fusing L2,3 and L3,4. He said that he doesn't want to fuse any more than that as my mobility would be limited. He said I have no disk at all between L3/4; thus, my vertebrae show bruising and inflammation.

I am excited to think this horrific pain may be lessened. His first date free is Dec. 13th. He stated they will go in from my side (less invasive) and attach to my other rod system. It is a new Methodist hospital that only does surgeries in Addison, TX near Dallas. My hubby asked how long the fusions/equipment could last and he said up to 20 yrs. I am 57, so that is welcome news!

Has anyone had this new less invasive spinal fusion from the side? His nurse told me they use cadaver or artifical fusion materials for the disk instead of from my hip like last time.

Again, thank you for your replies. This is a WONDERFUL forum.

Hugs from Texas!

  • Sorry that you need to go back in for another fusion, but hope that this will help ease your pain.
You have about 6 weeks to prepare and also to do something special for yourself, you deserve it.

I know that I have seen others who have had this type of fusion, hopefully they will chime in here.

We will be here for you, leading up to and after the surgery, cheering you on.

  • Hope this next fusion will eventually give you good pain relief.

Do all your preparation over the next few weeks, and as Karen said, do something special for yourself or perhaps your hubby will take you out to dinner.

I haven't had this type of fusion either - mine was done from the front and I healed well.

When you need support, we're here and will help as much as we can.

  • I can't comment on your particular procedure, but I did have surgery at that particular hospital about 10 days ago. I had a very good experience there with pleasant and attentive staff. It is a very nice, new facility.

    Good luck on your surgery.
