  • I haven't had neck facet joint injections so hopefully someone will be able to help you with this but more info from Spine Health http://www.spine-health.com/treatment/injections/cervical-thoracic-and-lumbar-facet-joint-injections

I've had lumbar facet joint injections but didn't have sedation and will not have any more without sedation as they were uncomfortable but I did get some relief for a few weeks after the series of 3 sets of 8 injections separated by a few weeks.

I hope they help for you and you get sedation. If you had sedation with your epidural you will probably also get it with these but you can call the Dr's Nurse and they will let you know. Let us know how it works for you. Take care. Charry

  • :SS I have just had injections to cervical area done through side of neck, 2 injections either side and they were most uncomfortable to receive. There is no anaesthetic given but unfortunately my first lot gave me pain relief only for 3 weeks then pain returned worse than ever! Most recent injections were given on 10th November and again pain relief is very good but for how long I wonder. They have increased the dosage level this time in the hope I can remain pain free for several weeks before I undergo my 3rd Cervical Operation of fusing facet joints in areas C5/6/7, together with possible replacement of discs.
  • thank you wonder!,,,this is most helpful.i see They also come in that sort of package deal as in 2-3 rounds of injects w waried amounts of medicine,
good luck to you sir w your operation,i am xtremley scared to operate(which is good because i am not a doctor,ha ha u get it)..as it is so final.

  • also going to have my first lumbar facet injections in a week and a half.

Just hoping to get some sort of relief while I wait for a fusion.

I know for mine, they will be done in an operating room setting under xray guidance (floroscopy) so they are able to get to the right spot. As far as I know, I will not be sedated at all.

Wishing you all the best with yours, hope that they give you some relief!

  • facet injections yesterday. Fingers crossed that I get some relief.

The doctor that did them did a great job, wasn't really painful at all...guess I was already in my usual pain so couldn't really get worse. I felt the left side a little, which is my worse side, so maybe that's why?

The numbing agent felt pretty good on my lumbar area, but I still had my same terrible pain lower, on coccyx, butt, hips etc... hopefully when the steroid part kicks in it might help there??

Worst case senario...will feel the same as before...

Anyone feel better once the steriod kicks in, in places where the numbing agent didn't affect?

  • Hi Karen! I can't comment on the lumbar, as I've never had them there, but just wanted to send good wishes and say I hope they work for you and last a long time!

  • Hey there OUCH2....just wanted to give this thread a little bump, and ask how you are feeling since your facet injections?
I'm waiting for mine in the new year.
  • I have had 9 lots of cervical facet injections, with sometimes 5 or 6 in one procedure.
It is an uncomfortable procedure as you can feel the needle poking around, so just grip the bed and think of the benefits!
Take a good pain killer beforehand, too.
I must say that I had mixed results, sometimes good others not much different. Could last up to 3 months but usually 6-8 weeks.
After my specialist retired I had to find a new pain Dr, and was lucky to find one who conducted a physical exam instead of just forming an opinion from my symptom list.
He found that my neck pain was not from arthritis as originally thought, but simply from very tight muscles applying a lot of force to the neck.
Treatment advised was remedial massage, and that did the trick.
Better still, after 18 months, I started taking magnesium oil, and haven't had a recurrence of that type of headache and neck pain since.
Still get a sore neck from time to time, but not those awful headaches.
  • I am surprised Peter B did not seem to get numbing in the cervical area before the shots. I always did. I had various types of shots which worked for me for up to a year at a time, and helped me for years. Unfortunately my neck kept getting worse and I recently had surgery.

  • Just thinking back-it's been several years now-I can recall the doctor saying " a bit of a scratch now" as he injected a local anaesthetic. So it was done.
What I also remember that it didn't stop all feeling at all. It wasn't actually a very painful procedure, but definitely uncomfortable as I could feel the needle, and sometimes it did hurt a bit.
  • It has been a little over two weeks since my facet injections. Unfortunately I didn't get any relief from them.

When I first had them done I felt a bit better in my low back(the stiffness type feeling) but my actual pain is lower...in buttocks, hips. It didn't help that at all. This all could be a good thing though, since I am having ADR surgery in a couple of months and was concerned about my facets being "moderate" and that the ADR would be hard on them.

Since it didn't help, I think that my facets aren't really a pain generator for me...so that is a good thing...?

I would definately go back and try them again after my ADR surgery if I have lingering pain/stiffness, as I was very impressed by how they were done(operating room setting, very sterile, great how it is xray guided)

I would recommend anyone to give facet injections a try!

  • Worth a try as you search for the causes and treatments. We are all different, and medical knowledge is still limited, so it can be a long process of trial and error.
