Pain in Neck Shoulders and Arms nearly 4 months

I have been having pain in my neck, shoulder blades and both arms for nearly 4 months with strange sensations all over my body. For instance, last night my front teeth went numb for a minute or so. I feel numbness on my face, shins, back of legs etc. periodically. I suffered a herniated disc last year and had an MRI done, with Chiro and PT for several months the pain subsided and my "normal" stress pain remained which I have had most of my adult life (i am 45). Thinking that this new arm pain was herniated disc again I went to the chiro, then PT, then my dr and still no relief in fact it got worse. I was then referred to a Neurologist, he ordered a new MRI which showed 2 bulging disc, bilateral foraminal stenosis and DDD. He also did an EMG. He told me to ignore the results of MRI that those were not the cause of my pain and told me I do not have CTS. He suggested I might have a virus and I should go see a Rheumatologist. He did not refer anyone just walked out of the room. Well I considered him a quack with bad bedside manners and went back to my dr. My dr then referred me to a Neurosurgeon which i saw yesterday...he reviewed my new MRI and basically told me the same thing. I apologize for dragging this out but I'm so confused as to how the disc are not causing my pain. Also, I did have a Cervical ESI 2 weeks ago and although it did help with my headaches and alleviate some of my neck pain for a very short time my arm pain NEVER went away. My arm pain is in the front of my chest and runs under my arm in the armpit area on both arms. Its my greatest pain at this time with my neck coming in 2nd then shoulder blades.

If anyone has had any symptoms like these please please share your story. I did make an appt with a Rheumatologist and have no idea of what to expect!

Thank you for listening and wishing each of you a great painfree day :)

  • Have you tried getting another opinion from an orthopedic spine specialist? You might want to go a different direction and see what they would say.

With the arm issues, I'd get in to one because you don't want to risk permanent nerve damage if it's caused by your cervical spine. Also, try to avoid the chiro - if you have a disc that's close to your spinal cord and get manipulated the wrong way, it could cause some very serious problems.

So, that's just my 2 cents - I'd get in to see a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine specialist, one that only works on spines and get an additional opinion from them.

Take care and please keep us posted.
  • I agree with Cath and wouldn't see a Chiropractor for adjustments for a herniated disc. However I did get inferential treatments and ultrasound treatments for neck and shoulder blade pain which really helped.

Get an opinion from a Spine Surgeon and hopefully your Dr. will get a report back from the Neurologist who did the EMG and if it showed you have negative nerve issues.

I take Cymbalta and small dose of Lyrica for nerve issues from my neck and seems to help. I hope you get more answers for your pain soon. I had issues with a sinus infection that caused numb nose and top of teeth but that was my experience only. I hope you get some answers soon. Take care. Charry

  • Apparently your neuro has no idea what he's talking about. I had the same MRI results & am having the same symptoms as you. Yes, it DOES cause arm pain. Not in everyone, but in a lot of people, including you & me.
Don't waste your time on another neurologist, chiro or rheumatologist. Get into a neuroSURGEON, or an orthopaedic surgeon.
As I said before, I am having the same symptoms as you, same MRI results. My surgery is scheduled for Dec 7th. Get another doctor right away!

  • Thank you for responding and I thought i should maybe go see an OS. The last appt was with a Neurosurgeon..in fact one of the top in the ATL area. My DH has been saying all along that i should go to an Ortho or Ortho Surgeon but i've been going with the referrals. Do you have the pain in your armpits as well? A friend of mine told me she had the same symptons but only on 1 arm and she was diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome...i looked it up and there are so many symptoms that match...UGH! I have found the BEST relief is prescription Motrin..800 mg every 4-6 hours. so something is very much inflamed! What type of surgery are you having? Thanks again! Jo
  • Thank you Cath and Charry for you positive input! Charry I have been prescriped Lyrica, Cymbalta, Elivil and Celexa...I'm a bit terrified to try the anti depressants and my PCP told me not to take Lyrica until diagnosed..the physiatrist that did the ESI rx'd those...my PCP was not impressed with him :( I'm extremely sensative to meds in fact I'm having panic attacks because my PCP is changing my anxiety meds..wants me to cross over Xanax to Klonopin. I have been taking xanax for YEARS and afraid of w/d :(
