Hi All...
I'm new to this forum and just looking if anybody has some insights that can help.

Here's my story in short:
I use to box for 5 years. Usually got beat up pretty bad when I sparred...

3 years ago now I got hit with an uppercut and have never been the same since.
After the blow once I got home started suffering concussion like symptoms. I never actually lost consciousness at the time so I didn't think it was a big deal,
but I knew something was wrong when I couldn't remember stuff and slurring my speech. Obviously I had a consussion. I thought I could just sleep it off for a few nights and all would be good.

Luckly the concussion symptoms wore off (I thought I would be like that forever), but every since I have had persistent, non stop headaches and this dull sensation at the very base of my skull on the right side.

I've seen my general doctor tons of times, seen a few neuros, chiro, etc. but to no help. I've gone on some meeds, anti depressants. and you know how it is the quality of life is just horrible. I'm only 28!!!

The only thing I know for sure is that throughout the day constantly, every day I keep having this urge to tilt my head to the left side. I really feel like I want to crack it. Sometimes I also get the feeling that my head just isn't sitting on my neck right as weird as that seems. Anyway I'm pretty sure the headches are a refered pain from my neck and something is going on in there. I was just hoping if anybody had some thoughts or avenues I should look into to get some relief. Thanks!

...doing right by seeing all those docs, but unfortunately..you may need to see a few more.

Not only are you young for this situation...but young to find out medical field can be frustrating and trial and try again to say the least.

I am not a doc..but would think to stay away from chiros for now..only until you really know what's up as accidently sometimes things could be made worse.

For myself, I would go to another doc. My situations, no doc really helped me until the pain management doc. He did EMG..that most revealing.. and also when sometimes he gives injections for lower back..his..whatever..xray machine..sees things so clearly even I can see part of my spine bone on bone.

So, my experience is PM doc have little more know how. Good luck to you!

  • Thanks for the reply...

At first I though there was something wrong in my head... since I keep getting all these headaches, but then I realized that is probably referred pain and the real cause is probably from somewhere else.

I have an appt with my doctor next week and going to ask him to refer me to a spine specialist. Is there such a thing? or are there neck specialist? Can anybody think of what doctor I might try seeing ? At this point I don't even know what is causing the pain!!!! I just want to get a legitimate understanding of what is actually going on so I can deal with it.

  • I had a lot of luck early on with a chiro that specialized in C1/C2 (atlas/axis problems). He didn't do the neck manipulations that some chiros do. But, I wonder if that hit didn't cause a problem there, especially with your description? My physiatrist used to joke with me about how a problem there was like trying to balance a bowling ball (my head) on a broken golf tee. Pretty much what it feels like, too! I used to tell my husband that the headache would go as soon as my neck "clunked" back into place.

PM is probably the best bet right now, as the spasms are probably causing the pain and keeping your neck from readjusting the right way (clunking). :)
  • Thanks for the input :) This makes more sense because I have often told my wife... "it feels like my head is "not on right" and I'm constantly twitching to try and get it back in place...

so you have had a similar experience?

What kind of doctor and or tests do I need to do in order to help diagnose if this is the problem and to work towards correcting it?

in the meantime I am absolutely going to be getting my general doctor to refer me to PM because this is ridiculous!!

I have an appt with my doctor on Tuesday if you or anybody can let me know by then that would be great.

thanks and I hope you are doing okay!

  • and welcome to spine health! Sorry for how you are feeling. Have you been seen by a fellowship trained orthopedic or neurosurgeon? If not can you ask your doctor to be referred to one?

Have you had any tests such as brain,or cervical MRI, CT, EMG? Do you have any weakness in your arms,or tingling, numbness?

Don't give up looking for answers. We are here to support you!

  • I have only had an X-ray which has come back negative.
I have not had a ct, mri, or emg.

which is the best one to have?

I have only seen a neurologist, not a neurosurgeon (because at first I thought it was just headaches) and have not seen an orthopedic surgeon. again what is the best doctor I should see for what I am describing?

I have never had any tingling in arms or legs, etc.

  • I went to my gp the other day and he said I shouldn't see an orthopedic seurgeon... he referred me to a "headache" specialist instead and tried to put me on topomax. What should I do??? I seriously feel like something might be out of line in my head or I"m having spasams or something I don't know?? anybody??
