Neck Pain

I was diagnosed in 2005 with a herniated disk C6-7 choose not to have surgery and for many years have lived without pain. With my work I do lots of lifting and starting having right shoulder pain which quickly progressed to limited movement in the shoulder and severe pain to reach with my right arm. By another week it was down my forearm and tingling to my pinky and ring finger. I saw an Orthopedic surgeon who ordered an MRI the results showed some mild tears of the shoulder. My next appointment to discuss the MRI my doctor said it was my neck not my shoulder and ordered an MRI of my neck. My MRI came back saying Prominent right-sided disk C6-7 impinging upon the Dural Sac and exiting the nerve root and Primarily left sided protruding disk at the C4-5 level without significant impingement upon the exiting nerve root.

I was told in 2005 these types of conditions can heal themselves and went about life pain free until now. My neck still is pain free but my shoulder and arm are the problem.
Has anyone had a condition like this heal or can you tell me what kind of treatment you have tried other than surgery or if you have had surgery did it help?

I'm currently not taking any pain medications except I take two Aleve daily and that controls the pain. My doctor ordered Celebrex but I didnt feel a difference with it.

I'm guessing my doctor will refer me to a back and neck specialist I' not sure. Thanks for any help or information with this topic

  • Hi!

I also had more shoulder pain than neck pain. One of the last things I though about before going into the operating room was I sure hope it is my neck and not my shoulder because here goes! It is hard to think that so much pain in one area is coming from another.

As for your question, "can it heal itself". Yes and no, it just depends on how bad the herniation is. If it is a mild bulge it may and go and heal over time. If it does not heal it will turn into a herniation. And if it is severely herniated and the disc is shredded apart, it most likely won't heal and its time for surgery. That's what happened to me. If you can control your pain with aleve you may not need surgery. You should definitely try all conservative methods (meds, shots, PT) before having surgery.
