ESIs didn't work, what next?

My orthopedic surgeon said that he doesn't recommend surgery for my herniated disc because of my age. He told me that the only way he'd do it is if I asked for it. I was sent to a pain management doctor to get 2 ESIs done but they didn't help.

I was wondering, what other treatments will they want to give me? There wouldn't be a "list" of treatments they check off until they find something that works for each patient, is there?

  • Hi Sadie, have they mentioned a nerve root block?

I've had 2x nerve blocks followed by 2 x denervations or Radio frequency, mine went into the facet joint in my neck some years ago, in fact I have one tomorrow in my lower spine around L5/S1 area,I have never had ESI although it seems similar,I am not keen on this at all and have mixed results so far,I did say I would never have this done again and here I am going in for another go,I think we are all at a loss as to what to do next and in desperation so just do it.I have had surgery thinking it would cure me,well it did in one way not in another,my spine feels good now yet the nerves still suffer although some improvement since op.

This time tomorrow I will be back home posting how it went.

Hope you find some relief somehow best of luck.

  • Hi again Sadie83,
There is - apparently and unfortunately, no such list. When the doctor says they don't reccomend surgery, and that they are out of ideas, Im afraid - from my experience, that is really the case...
It has been 10 months since my last steroid injection (which had no positive effect at all...)
And after months of working through and painkillers/muscle relaxers, the doctor is sending me for another MRI (On Monday morning)- The numbness in my foot and leg is getting worse... and I feel terrible (And I know I shouldnt even think it, let alone type it) But I almost hope that the MRI shows something new-or even that It's worse, so that surgery or SOMETHING new becomes an option...
So tired of no answers and no offers of hope!
I have been researching alternative therapies, but I can't imagine the insurance company being interested in funding them...and I can't really afford it at the moment (Fiance off work for surgery & recovery for 4 months!)... Anyone tried hypnotherapy?
  • Hi Sadie83

Nerve block went well on 19th,it has relieved some pain in my leg and I have more movement in my foot although not full range.

Maybe there is something they have missed on the MRI that needs looking at something is causing you pain maybe they have overlooked something, you would have thought the ESI's would have hit the spot, perhaps get another opinion from a spinal/orthopaedic specialist.

I hope you get some answers soon and treatment underway.
