This is my 2nd post since Feb 2011. I was diagnosed Feb 2011 if C5/C6 & C6/C7 disc disease, severe forminal stenois in some areas, hernia's at these levels with dessication.
Surgery is not an option, I won't do it. My Docs said some studies suggest 5 years of relief after surgery is the same relief if conservative measures were used.
Anyhow, I am managed on 15mg of oxycodone [plain immediate release] x4 a day.
I did 1 round of epidurals around C6/C7 Aug - Sept of 2011.
Changed insurance, went PPO so I had more Docs to choose from vs. the HMO which had a few Docs with bad consumer ratings.
Had a 6 facet injections Monday, do not know what levels, if I had to guess, C4/C5 thru C/7. Got marcaine numbing medicine and the first injection around C4/C5 began and then something went horribly wrong.
Left arm went paralyzed, throat felt numb, right arm went, could not breathe, legs paralyzed. When I talked it felt like I had head in bowl, or fingers in ears, sounded weird to me. Then it rapidly went into I could not inhale my chest was paralyzed. Each breath was less than the last one, and I was fully alert thru this whole accident.
They took what seemed forever, hit my in upper arm with epi pen, must have gotten help because I exhaled saying softer and softer, "I cannot breathe" until I could not longer speak since I could not get air. I was flipped on my back and ambu bagged and felt great to feel my lungs expand with the bagging. My body we was limp on the flip and I got immediatly nauseated. I remained alert, and really thought I was gonna pass away face down.
911 came, and I was transported to hospital, they started IV on me in ambulance by then the paralysis wore off and I started vomiting blood.
I was admitted for aspiration pneumonia. Since I was alert, I figured I refluxed into lungs when they ambu bagged me or flipped me on my back, I was elevated in ambulance. I heaved all the way to hospital [alert] and they said I had blood. The ER hit me with drugs to stop it and took me to xray and they found the aspiration..my white count spiked and they gave me 3 diff kinds of antibiotics IV for 24 hours.
My pain mgt Doc, felt I was in anaphylactic shock allergic to preservative in steroid calling this mishap and "allergic reaction". The ER Docs and internal med Docs in the hospital said they were not so sure that is what happened.
I was told NO MORE steroid shots by pain mgt but I am concerned I will be labaled allergic to steroids now when in fact this was a "needle accident" and not medication allergy.
So for those getting facets, this was my first one by an anesthesiologist, and something went wrong. Every epidural or any injection is with risk.
Some how, I got paralyzed from the chin down for 5-7 mins, hit with epinephrine, instantly became a GI bleed [bleed came from top of stomach/esophagus since it was bright red vs dark meaning it mixed with stomach acids] and aspiration pneumonia. Brain scan CT was fine in hospital, chest showed the lung infiltrate and effusion.
They released me 24 hours later from hospital, stayed overnight 1 night.
I am a runner training for 1/2 marathon, I am 55 yo female, healthy weight and nutrition.
So, I guess no more shots, and I refuse surgery, and suppose meds is where it will be...*sigh*.
To scared to consider spine stimulator. I hate to admit I am emotionally traumatized after this accident. It was just my luck I was so alert..
