Pain gone, now numb. Scared!

JohnnyRebJJohnnyReb Posts: 2
Hello. Im in my second battle with back pain and sciatic problems. Im 27 years old and had my first surgery at 24 for 2 disk ruptures and severe leg pain. After surgery i was ok, but never was the same and alwalys kept a very stiff and unflexible back.
Ive had pain spells off and on since but usually a steriod shot and few days of rest would do the trick. Now the past month ive spiraled back into the same situation, but worse.
Started suffering with extreme pain in lower back, and it felt swollen and feverish. Also had some leg pain and burning. A trip to the doctor for a steriod shot and 12 day predizone dose did no good. My leg eventually became very severely painfull. I had bad muscle spasms in the thigh and then it moved into my calf. My calf was cramping and moving like a baby was trying to get out. My toes wiggled on their own and i was in complete agony. Not having any insurance i tried to tough it out and did.
Heres what scares me. I suffered with these pains and severe muscle contractions for 2 days, then it dissapeared. The problem is, its all numb now. My left buttox, down the rear of my upper leg, and the back half of my foot ( heel) is dead. Kinda like the dentist ahot me with novicane. Its somewhat a relief because im not in pain. But i have difficulty walking with my dead heal. My pants rub the back of my leg and it sorta feels like burned skin after a severe burn.
I am seing a specialist feb 6. But im worried sick i have severed my nerves hence the djssapearing pain. I am a hard working truck driver and i fear being disabled. Anybody had a similiar experience??

...about your cramping trying to deliver a baby! :)
    The pain is described clearly.

I used to describe the pain as a living thing in me.. more like alien...moving around to..here and there.
I am not as familiar with your situation..pain gone and replaced with numbness. Mine is pain somewhat lessened and new symptom of numbness.

Your pain and burning like..sound awefully difficult to have while driving a truck and unable to get up and and streatch to often. Is it possible doc may want you to think of another kind of job?

I will be interested and following your post and hope for those with your situation will respond with encouragement and info..:)

Also, wanted to welcome you and there is lots of info on this site and search can take you to past posts that may be helpful.

Keep good communication with your doc so he knows how you are doing and he may be able to reassure you.
And maybe reassurance that he's there for you.. even without having insurance.

You have a lot going on.

Let us know how it is going!

  • Thanks for the responce. Im not working anymore right now. I cant safely operate a 18 wheeler in this condition. So im off untill this is resolved. I have a hard enoug time walking muchless climbing into a rig lol. My left leg is weakened and foot is numb. I kinda just stumble around when i need to .
Im just a bit worried how extreme pain just goes numb. At least now im not in pain. But tonight i realized my rectal area is numb too! The 6 day wait for a MRI is going to drive me nuts. Im scared i have cauda equina syndrome
  • You should be in the ER right now. If your rectal area is numb you need to go NOW before you have permanent damage.
  • I agree if you're numb in the rectal area and think you have Cauda Equine I would go right away to ER and get checked out. There's tests the Dr. can do or a referral to Ortho or Neurosurgeon right away.

It's not right you would be driving with a numb foot either. You need to check out your disability plan at work hoping you have one.
