Years of chronic pain from a spinal injury, artificial L5/S1 disc lead to dependency then full addiction. After years of being terrified to address the topic, I checked my self into substance abuse treatment for 30 days and I am now doing the full addict protocol, abstaining from mind altering chemicals for 4+ months, and got my body free of any tolerance or dependence on medications.
Surprisingly enough, and with steroid epidurals, PT, etc., my spine/leg pain has not magically fixed itself. I am relatively young and I am looking at a life that will require pain management. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of topic? Any advice or tips on this issue would be appreciated.
FYI - As part of the addiction treatment, I disclosed everything to Dr.'s, family, wife, 12 step group, etc. I put so many checks and balances in place that it would be comical if not so deadly serious. Current method of 16 Advil/day or 5 days on, 5 days off of Toradol nasal spray is not sustainable. If anything can cause relapse into old ways it will be the ever present pain.
