Exercises to do (or avoid) with SI joint pain?

Can someone direct me to anything that outlines what exercises might be good to do to help with SI joint issues, and what exercises do I need to limit or avoid completely?

  • After years of having chronic back pain, I've now been told I've got S.I. joint dysfunction as well now :( I have been attending physio for the last 2-3 weeks where she's given me certain exercises to do.

Before, after fusion surgery, when the pain just centred around my lumbar spine, I could do quite a few exercises. But now, every time she has me lifting/bending my right leg to try and improve my core muscles, it sets my right butt pain off. It's so uncomfortable and has me jumping up to walk around for a few minutes. When I continue with the exercises, she leaves out any that could do this again, thank G-d!

So, I'm really sorry, but I cannot help you with what particular exercises you should be doing. I don't think anyone on S.H. can either because everybody's pain generator may be coming from a slightly different place/condition.

You need to get professional advice on exercise. It is important because if you are doing the wrong one, it could actually cause you more damage and therefore increase your pain levels.

One of the surgeons that first operated on me said that if I do any exercise that hurts my back, then I should stop it immediately. And if anyone tells you "no pain, no gain", that does NOT apply to the spine. So please be careful.

If you're not sure and are not able to seek professional help right now, I'd just stick to swimming and plenty of walking, but that's just my personal view ok.
