Undiagnosed Neck Pain and Discomfort

Here's what I've come up with so far. I have had this problem for over 4 years now and I'm only 20 years old. Please let me know if this sounds familiar and/or you can help me get a better diagnosis. I live in the Seattle, WA area.

Discomfort (not sure whether considered pain or not) on left side of neck up into jaw near ear, and down into around shoulder and shoulder blade area, both front and back.

Feels sometimes better, sometimes worse after sleep.
Feels best with constant movement.
Feels worse AFTER sitting for a long time (not usually during).
Feels worse after standing still for a long time.
Feels a little better with heat.
Feels a little better with cold.
Feels better during and for about an hour after shower.
Feels a little better with vitamins (mainly vitamin B)
Feels better for a day or two after chiropractor, massage, or acupuncture. No long term improvements.
Felt better for a couple days after anti-inflammatory injections.
Sometimes feels worse after massage.
Occasionally discomfort switches sides after chiropractor adjustment or massage, and I feel it on the right side instead of the left side.
Sometimes feels better with medications such as muscle relaxant or anti-inflammatory such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Muscle relaxant effect wanes after certain number of uses.
Stretches and posture correction aggravates it and has no long-term effects.

Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to give.

  • Hi and welcome, You say you looking for a beter diagnosis?

Well what is your diagnosis now from a dr?

If we could give you a diagnosis from all those symptoms you mention we would open up our own on line clinic and put every hospital and clinic out of business,

Have you seen a dr about this? Or only a chiro?

If you not yet seen a profesional dr then you need to see a specialist,

We are just patience ourself so we can toss a 1000 diagnosis at ya thats off the wall such as when was the last time you seen a dentist? Is the cause maybe a bad tooth causing jaw and ear to cause discomfort,

Infected tooth can cause ear and jaw and even going in to neck, Other then that who knows what is causing your issue,

It helps if you have more information from a dr on your diagnosis,
That way people here can help if they had same diagnosis and they can share what they had done to get releif,

    Good luck. Keep us informed,

  • Thanks for the quick reply!

I've seen an orthopedist and a TMJ expert/dentist.

The dentist gave me a "Night Guard" which is supposed to eventually make the muscles in your jaw relax more, but it has only made the issue worse. I have tried using it for an extended period of time, such as a few months, with no avail. I will, perhaps, make an appointment to see if they might have missed a tooth infection, because the symptoms sort of fit. Who knows.

The orthopedist, close to a couple years ago, told me it was all in my head. A year later I came back to him because I'd run out of other options and he had a bone scan done, which showed areas of increased inflammation (from most inflamed to least)in my collar bone, below my shoulder blade, and on the side of my neck. I had the first two injected with an anti-inflammatory, which unfortunately didn't work and used up all of my insurance coverage for this year. Now I'm stuck with my secondary insurance, Group Health, which has an even more useless orthopedist than the one I already mentioned.

I appreciate the help so far! I hope that someone else on this forum sees my post and has gone through similar symptoms and can give me some kind of new insight. It's hard going from one doctor to the next and not losing hope.
  • You might want to go to see a rheumatologist. I know you are young, and some people mistakenly think that only old people go to rheumatologists. My daughter started to see one at 14. With the inflammation, a rheumatologist may be able to assist.

You could ask your primary about that possibility.

I am new here and will post in the new members place but for now - I found this thread and I had a jaw infection (osteomyelitis) due to an abscessed tooth which would not respond to oral antibiotics (well also had some bad dentistry taking place etc etc that eventually ended up with the osteomyelitis). When the jaw pain began- simultaneously- base of the skull pain began.....ooooooh such pain.....then IV abx got rid of jaw pain but base of the skull pain has remained. This has been now for about 6 months. Got some imaging tests to see what is going on in skull pain.....but waiting for results.
Anyone else ever been on this road?
