I am too young to feel this old

I am 69, pushing 70.

I have stenosis some disk deterioration and serious Radiculopathy. Pain in my legs, buttocks, both sides and most all of the time, lying down, sitting down and standing.

Have had epidurals, physical therapy, tens, and have done okay until just recently. I just believed in pushing through the pain until I just couldn't do it anymore. I can't take NSAIDS because of kidney function issues. So I have been taking tylenol 2000 or 3000 mg a day.

I have seen only my family doc and the pain doc who does nothing but give shots period. Not discussing other options etc. So after two epidurals and the pain got worse I decided to take matters into my own hands. I have an appointment at the Spine Center at the University of Iowa on February 20th. I had to wait 6 weeks to get in but I believe it will be worth it. It is with an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spines.

Meanwhile last week for what I bleieve is the first time in my life I went to my family doc and said give me something stronger for this pain I can't tough it out anymore. So he gave me a steroids pack and vicodin 5/325.

So I am able to be mobile again and even have had a lot more energy than I did (due to the steroids?) but I still have shooting pains down my legs especially when lying down.

So I am writing here for support because I have no questions yet. I have been using a cane, otherwise most people would not know that I am in pain and I am sick to death of well meaning people asking have I been to a chiropractor (not in my life would I do that) or tried acupuncture ( I might but not right now.

  • welcome to spine health. i'm glad you got some relief from the stronger meds and steroids... you deserve it best of luck to you on the 20th. keep us updated hope to see you about the forum here. there are some totally cool people here, even some canadian ones!!! especially this "babyruth" chick :D you know how canadians spell canada? C eh, N eh, D eh.
  • Hello,
Yes far too young by the sound of it, a clinical psychologist once told me to give the most ridiculous answer to a silly question and we all get asked about simplistic cures and mythical solutions, we need to work on a good answer for you !

What about, “ I am only carrying this cane for a friend ”

I tried acupuncture but leaked everywhere.

At 70 years young you should be quaffing champagne, dancing or playing golf, we will try to help you as much as we can.

When I do not use my own cane, “are you better now” or have you tried honey....not unless it has medication in it. FOOLS !!!

Take care and good luck.. John too old for this also.

  • Do you use a candy cane?

Candy cane with honey might work Eh?
