Back pain but MRI shows unremarkable

First off I am so relieved to find these posts. I have been in pain for over 2 years and my doctors think there is nothing wrong. MRI and Xray are good. Went from my family dr to a pain clinic/ortho dr. They think I am just looking for pills. Well I am now cause that is the only relief from misery and suffering from being in pain for over 2 years. Thanks to their reluctance to listen to me and properly treat my pain I have found ways to get what I need. I don't drink but have had days where intoxication was the only way to "step away" for a break from the pain. Ill brb, at work now........

  • Did pain dr offer injections at all for the pain? Many times mri and exray is not enough to show the issue that could. be going on.

Pain specialist many times has to do nerve block and other injections to find what level pain is coming from,

He can also do a discogram to test the disc that mri not be showing many times,

    Along with emg, mylogram,

So xray and mri is usualy the 1 st step but does not always stop there,
Flexicore ADR 2004 resulting nerve damage l4l5 Fusion 2006 same level, 2009 hardware removal with lami !
    2012 scs implant ,
  • No my pain dr after 7 months asks "now where does it hurt again" . So needless to say I am finding a new doc. In chicago srea and a friend refered me to dr ghanayem. I have heard more good than bad about him but he seems highly respected. My current ortho doc prescribed butrans patch. Made me sick as a dog, couldn't breathe, and the worst constipation I have ever experienced. It did completely cure the pain but horrible side effects. I even asked current ortho dr if there was any other tests and he more or less blew me off with a " not really". Either he is an idiot or he thinks I'm a junkie. Now back to my pain...... lol "back" to my pain. Get it :) first off something is triggering my muscles to spasm and lock up. With a proper pain blocker the muscles release andd I feel a more pinpointed pain between t5 and t7. It feels like someone stretched my spine apart and dropped in a tiny pebble to grind constantly then put back together. Often it feels like spine is bone on bone grinding. Doc was touching my spine and I feel a sore spot. Sometimes worse than othhers.
  • Also my insurance co declined my injections due to both doctors stating everything is fine. Injection was supposed to be last Friday.
  • I had the same thing happen to me in 2006. Went to 7 different Drs and they all said MRI is fine, yada yada. Finally went to spine clinic and Dr said that all disc tears are not seen by MRI, and had a discogram done. Bingo...3 torn discs. Hopefully that gives you some idea of what to ask for. I had a 2 level fusion in 2008 and another 2 level in 2010. It was the source of pain, if it hurts the disc is bad, if it doesnt, it isnt. Good Luck
  • Thank you for your post and advice. It is hopeful for me to see that someone with a similar experience to mine was able to find some answers. Did your fusions solve your pain?
