I had a Microdiscectomy 7 months back at l4-5 and l5-s1. Im perfect regarding the pain I had before but I have 3 problems
1) I still have numbness in my left leg below my knees especially the calf and the left and top of the feet
2) when I stand at one place for long my leg stars hurting and I have some pain the the leg which goes up to the back.
3) when I sit for long 3-4 hours I start to feel the burning sensation cum pain thing I had before surgery. Also when I sit on the sofa my back really hurts.

I am 19 and had back problems since the age of 15-16. I exercise daily. Well I miss it somedays but I'm pretty regular.

All these problems have improved largely over the months but I am tensed when will they go away. Any Suggestion??

  • I am not in my home country and don't have money to get another MRI or see a surgeon. I just visited my physical therapist and to him I seem to be doing fine. He said it takes a lot of time to heal. Maybe upto 2 years. He said that the sciatic nerve takes like a month to heal per inch.
Should I not worry and carry in or should I do something about it?
  • I'm not a doctor so I can only give an opinion from my own experience.

It can take a year or so for the leg pain/numbness to settle down.

Also, if you are sitting for up to 4 hours, it may be better for you to get up and walk about for a few minutes every hour to take the pressure off of your spine. If this is happening at work, I'm sure your employer would be ok with this if they are aware you have had previous back surgery.

Sitting on a sofa could put your spine in a 'slouched' position, and may be this is why your back pain increases.

    Just my thoughts.
