Small but definite herniation

Hi Guys,

I had an L5-S1 disc/laminectomy about 3 years ago. We knew there was a bulge on the right which was not addressed during that surgery. Now, the bulge has turned into a small (MRI confirmed herniation), diagnosing the intermittent numbness I have going on from my right buttock to the back of my knee or calf.

My physiatrist basically said "No more PT for you - go and see Dr C and get an epidural or nerve block and see a surgeon for a consult." Exactly what I am going to do.

So my questions are really about what could be in the cards for my future...minimum is a discectomy. Since I have DDD at this level and have previously had the disc/lami, I am concerned that I will need a fusion. I am equally worried that if I have the option of going disc/lami again I will end up with a fusion in a couple of years anyway.

Any thoughts on my predicament or questions I should ask my surgeon?

Thank you!

  • I would ask the surgeon his opinion of course, but it seems that everyone i know that has had a lamanectomy/discectomy has ended up going for a fusion a little later on in life. I know someone that got 2 discectomys on the same level and wound up with more pain after the second one... it ended up that he was bone on bone.

Good luck, and I hope whatever you do gives you relief.

  • Thank you Donnabe - I am in the position where if I am likely going to need a fusion in the future anyway, I would rather have it now (risks aside - I am younger and in good shape) than in 1-5 years after I have had more bits of my spine lopped off!
