Name for excruciating nerve-pain in the thigh of left leg

Cherry2012CCherry2012 Posts: 7
I have an excruciating pain in left thigh of my leg once in awhile that occurs during lying down in the bed. The Gabapentin 100 mg. tid works really well and this med. also offers me a good nite-sleep.

The GP thinks I have radiating pain from the buttock to the thigh, but I told him ONLY in the thigh of my left leg.

I just forgot the name for this 'nerve-pain' which I got from the Neurologist initially when I felt a sharp and intense pain in the leg about five to seven years ago. The pain is so excruciating that I sweat to the death and need to change all of my clothes after pain started to subside. I think those who go through this sort of pain understand what this pain is.

Does anyone know the name for this 'never pain' that affects ONLY one of thighs?

  • Welcome to Spine Health.

Is your pain on the back of your leg or on the front?

If it is on the back, it sounds like sciatica - nasty!

It's on the side of the thigh. As stated, it's unbearable and excruciating pain that lasts for about 5 - 10 minutes. I'm soaking-wet due to this intense pain. Lucky thing is that this pain does not happen if with med., but if does not take regularly, it happens. I think ONLY those who go through this pain understand how horrible pain is.
  • Hi Cherry,

    I HEAR YA!!

Had the exact same thing :O before starting Lyrica. It took a while before the dosage was increased and when it was, it did take care of most of that pain with no name. I told my doctors that it was the worst pain in my life (63 years old), even worse than childbirth.

I don't know the name you're looking for but it's sciatica that causes it.

I made a soft roll that I put under my thighs just below the buttocks and that helps. I also don't put my leg down immediately. I lay it down slowly with 3-4 min. intervals.

    Hope your pain stays away.

    Emma :)
  • I am a 69 year old grandma with sciatic pain, radiopathy, etc. I have severe arthritis in the facets of L1-S1. After 3 years of successful epidurals they stopped working so I went to the spine center at the U of Iowa med center. I can't take nsaids so I have taken tylenol for years.
The os at Iowa gave me gabapentin. It helps some but wears off quickly. The side effects are minimal and I have ramped up the dosage.
I am scheduled for another mri (had one 4 years ago). Report on my x ray at u of Iowa used the word severe.
My pain is awful especially when I lie down or get up after sitting. Shooting, stabbing and burning...

I have read many of your posts and doctor conversations. Am here to learn and share.
  • Sciatica, Not only did i have it, i still get it for the last 8 years even after surgery,

Only people who know how painful it is if they had it, When they compare it to there regular back pain they get once in a while from over doing it is nothing to the sciatic type nerve pain people deal with,

It will drain the life out of any person i dont care what shape you are in and how strong you are in dealing with pain,

Flexicore ADR 2004 resulting nerve damage l4l5 Fusion 2006 same level, 2009 hardware removal with lami !

  • i cringed when i read your post because i have this too and i therefore know how it feels. as others have been saying, it is called sciatica. it gets more aggravated when i lift anything heavy, like groceries.
