Bad Verdict - Spine PMngmnt "Nothing They Can Do"

Just getting home from an hour drive to Univ. Pain Management appt. with Spine-Pain Mmngnt. Dept.

So hoped be getting into Pain Mngmnt there would be light somehow in this tunnel - - had hopes there was a good turn 2 wks. ago when I met with Pain Mngmt Specialist, who is very good, thorough and address medications issues and offered possibly physical therapy, body work warm water pool qork....BUT following protocol was referred to see the Spine Pain Mmgnmt. Dept. for consult & assessment as well.

So, today had appt. with Spine Specialist who does spinal injections & spinal cord stimulators and after my exam, interview with Physician Asst. who left and relayed info to Director, who reviewed my recent MRI, the verdict was delivered in 4 words by the P.A. = "nothing they can do for me"..... that is...I am not candidate for cervical spine nerve blocks & facet nerve injections + impossible to do spinal cord stimulation with complex conditions (levo-curvature + complex mass of degeneration of bone osteophytes) can't get electrodes connected for C-6/7, T-1 - into /2 which now is in "crush and overlap"

I have no light at the end of the tunnel for relief.

I am in deep pain (physically C-Spine into T-Spine C-6/7 into &-3/4 (knife like pain non-stop scapular, upper spine shoulder blade, deep aching down my right arm) + the 90 mi drive, 3-4 hrs filling out paperwork, exam, reviewing symptoms, answering ??'s) and enormously feel the harshness of the reality and in the way it was relayed to me by the Phys. Asst. not the Dr. himself. (won't go into that now, only will say.... "insult to injury" would describe simply what it was ~X(

Thank God I could come here and share where things are....I am hurting on physical / emotional levels deeply.

  • Joy,

You are in my thoughts and prayers. I am sorry. Don't give up. The doctor should have told you himself.

Another surgery in the near future. I am 26 years old.

Current Meds- Norco 7.5/325, Cymbalta 60mg, Gabapentin, Adderall 20mg
  • My heart goes out to you.I am so sorry for the news that you received, and I agree, the doctor should have had enough courtesy to talk to you themself.

It is always so hard to go somewhere with hope, spend the whole day there, which is an impossible feat for most spineys, only to be told they can't do anything.

Don't give up looking for help. Glad that you came on here and shared with us, so we can send you our good thoughts and hugs.

  • much for your comments, thoughts and (((hugs)))

I told the P.A. after he delivered his verdict, that I expected to be seeing the Doctor (Pain Mgnmt of Spine Physician) and even though he tried to fend off that as a possibility "don't know if I could catch..." (another insult to injury for sure !) I had a long-standing appt. 3 wks and referral from Pain Mngmnt Physician - - really bad ethics and says much about their dedication to patient care !

So, yes he came in, and I did direct some ???'s to him about cervical injections, which I had no problem with (trauma from a C-8 nerve root injection at large Univ. out of state caused neuro problems to exacerbate and "my anatomy issues" and solid fusion previous surgery c-3 thru C-6 being an issue.

I could see he was not intending in doing a consult, since his P.A. told me what he felt was sufficient and was the bottom line....but I did request him to spend a few minutes with ???'s & address spinal cord stim being possible down the road. But he was blunt, quick, and in one sentence said "no way to do the electrode in the 6/7 level" and walking toward the door...he was done. And he was a sad specimen of "physician" working as Director of Pain Mngmnt with spine specialty.

Somehow I got the sense I was being astrocized since I had an assessment in the same Univ. but separate Dept & Complex from orthosurgeon who reviewed my C-Spine T-Spine films back in 2010 and who was very difficult in "allowing me" to ask ?'s about his surgery recommendation & selection of rods/screws as hardware option = his temperant and ego was its the only way to do it and then ended consult. That eliminated me considering him back then as a surgeon for me and my case. I am sure the Pain Managmnt - Spine care doc probably referenced that Surgeon's notes & his view where I didn't score any points in asking qualifying questions about his method and choice of hardware...can't have an educated patient and evidently it bending his ego a bit - - and the ripple effect to how this doctor had his P.A. deliver the verdict and not give me one minute of his time. But I held him to the line of respect and got barely that ! His bluntness and repeated tone "nothing we can do for you" was more appropriate if I had been in line at the guillatine those 3-4 hours.

Thank God I can transcend that level of insult and where some surgeons/physicians can go in my 30+ yrs spine journey.

But it is the fact that interventional pain treatments are not option that takes so much off the "table of hope" and survival for me.

(((Hugs))) back for your thoughts & in backing me up :) in this deliverance of another reality !
