New here, after some information. At a loss with pain :(

Hi all,

I had been having back pain for quite a while, at least once a month my back would get worse and I found it very hard to walk. I went to my GP a number of times who printed out back exercise sheets for me and sent me on my way.

Around 2 1/2 weeks ago, the pain returned with a vengeance. I decided to try another doctor. He sent me for a CT scan and this is the summery of the results I received yesterday:

Degenerative lumbar spondylosis with posterior disc bulges at the L4/5 and L5/S1 level with associated spinal canal stenosis.

I have to be honest and say that I don't really understand what all those things are above, sorry for my ignorance.

He told me that he would arrange some physio, so I am waiting on a call from them, no idea what to expect there at all.

I am currently in a lot of pain. I can't sit for too long or stand for too long. I am sleeping for a maximum of around 1 - 2 hours, so I am pretty exhausted.

I can't get comfortable even when lying down, laying on my back is out of the question as pain shoots through my back, buttocks, lets and abdomen.

The pain medication the Dr gave me is not working.

I am at a total loss as what I can do to ease this pain. I am quickly becoming an emotional mess.

Please accept my apologies if I have rambled on, I just don't know what to do any more to cope with this pain.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and especially so for any 'try at home' pain relief remedies.

  • hi and welcome to the forum! we are here to offer you support and answer what questions we can. lack of sleep is a big problems for most of us here!! i often use music to help me sleep and also take naps.. trying for a full nights sleep is almost impossible so napping in the day and a few hours of sleep at night make do for me..it would probably do you well to go see a pain specialist..he can guide you through therapies and medications which may be of benefit to you!! i am sorry i cannot read your CT scan but that is best left to your doctor..you will also find information here on the forum!! good luck to you!! stop by anytime!! we are always here to listen! Jenny :)
  • Welcome to Spine Health. You give a lot of information, but trust me you are not rambling.

Unfortunately, I am not qualified to help intrepret your MRI. You are better talking to the doctor who ordered it.

You do not state what your pain medication is. Since you say it is not working for you, I would ask your
doctor for something stronger or even a lumbar epidural steroid injection. I believe it would be
good to do this before you begin physical therapy. It will help make the physical therapy more bearable for you.

    Hope this helps.
  • Thank you for the welcome guys. I think I am just so frustrated at the moment I just didn't know where to turn or what to do.

The medications that I was given is called Naproxen and Panadol Osteo.

I am a little limited in what medication I can take as I have a bad reaction to codine.

I think I will take your advice Julie and give my Dr a call to make another appointment to discuss the medication.

I didn't think of music! I have just popped my Ipod onto the charger.

I have only just started to do some research but I think I am more confused now than when I began. Some sites recommend heat, others cold :/

It is so good you found this site. It's the best site ever! :) and people here SO supported.

There's lots of info and also the "search" may take you to past posts that might be helpful to you.

Good , bad, or indifferent, you sound so much like me...when my people are like...did you try this?...that...? I read this helps..You have to take charge of your own care!"....yikes!

Sometimes it's a little overwhelming..like you said.. ice or heat... or alternate or what? And I've been going through this years now and I have kind of submited to the doc. He says it...I do it.

Sometimes I don't have the energy to think too hard.
And sometimes I don't understand why the injection is going into a particular place...but what do you know? It works!

But having this cyber neighborhood to go through things with is just amazing and life changing in my book.

I wish you the best and pls keep us posted as to how you are doing!

  • Hi there... I read your post and felt like it was my words a while back in time... so many understand how you feel!
I started keeping a journal of what I was trying and how it was working.. (baths and time of day and temps, exercising notes, what I eat, how I slept and the weather even!). I like to think I am a perfect cookie, but I haven't found the right recipe yet for me!
We are all so different! Read all you can here pertaining to your injury... I keep a note book beside the computer to keep notes in when I come accross ssomething great... or I forget where it was ... and don't have the new information!
Another thing that helped/helps me is.. (gonna sound odd!!!).. but, I have named my back. Her name is Bertha.. and when i have bad days, bad pains, am frustrated that I 'am not able' to do whatever.... I get mad at Bertha. I found it helped me not hold in anger, grief, frustrations that just made me sink lower into a hell.
Support.. this site is amazing! I have learned ... distraction techniques... congnative behaviour techniqes that help me get through the bad days.
Gotta try to stay postitive! So eaaaasy to write it. I find it hard to keep up... so I use humour.. music.. pictures of loved ones.. especially kids! U-tube comedy shows or skits... it does help me.
SO... keep your chin up... *even if it hurts your back!!*. there is my warped humour there!..
Read all you can, buddy up with people with similar issues to you.. and share and try anything./everything.
    Bye for now! Cheers

  • Hi jodietas :H ,

Let me join the others of the Spiney Family in welcoming you aboard >:D< . As they have all said, myself included, this is a wonderful site with lots of great information. Best part is the people =D> ! We all understand what each other is going through because we all have at least one thing in common ... PAIN ~X( .

Though my issue are all in my cervical spine (neck), pain is pain. Nothing wears one out as coping with constant pain. Can you get a different pain medication that would allow you to rest better? Have you considered a pain management physician or neurologist? Sometimes they are together in the same practice. There is no reason for you to suffer. Keep pluggin' away at it! We are all here to listen to you about whatever, whenever. You will Spineys on here at all hours of the day and night. Please keep us posted on your progress. Again, welcome to Spine-Health >:D< .
