Post surgery pain

My husband had a micro disectomy surgery 4 weeks back. He had been having pain below his knee for the past 1 year. Previously he would have pain only if he sits for too long, but for the past one year he had pain below his knee 24/7. The doctor said his disc was calcified and had to drill it to remove.

The issue here is , after the surgery he has pain in his knee(not below his knee), when we asked his doctor he said it is probably nerve irritation and swelling and he prescribed a steroid dose pack. When my husband was taking the medication his pain level was 1-2 but now without his medication it is again between 5-6.

Did anyone have a similar case? Is this pain caused by nerve damage? Did we wait too long to have the surgery and the pinched nerve will take longer to heal? approximately How long can we anticipate for the nerve to heal?

I am very heart broken that the surgery didn't turn out the way we expected. What questions should I ask my doctor on our post op visit?

Thanks for reading this..please let me know if there is any positive light to his case.
