Hi Newbie with horrible buttock pain & sciatica

igoldfishiigoldfish Posts: 3
I've been in absolute agony and hoped I'd get advice on how to get to a doctor and what pain meds work best for sciatica and SI.

I’m a 60 yr old woman…have had back problems off & on for years from an active sports life. Had a psoas muscle cramped like concrete for ten years until a gifted sports masseuse worked it out – a miracle. A year ago I had bout of what I think was sciatica from a tight piriformis. Searched U tube for exercises. Did them and it went away. Six weeks ago I liifted a heavy object and got that “twinge”. Did all the stuff to prevent it from getting worse to no avail. It warped into bad pain in my upper right butt and down my leg to my right foot. The piriformis exercises didn’t help. My upside down board didn’t help. Just keeps getting worse. Now I’m thinking it might be a disc issue and I am concerned that it is serious.

From an impressive horseback riding accident in 1976, my back looks like a train wreck on x-ray. But I can go a year or so without any back issues if I do all the right stuff. So I am baffled and, as you all know, the pain is terrible. I have osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia & lupus but this is a separate thing (I think) . I have some leftover Neurontin but it is only taking the worst edge off, in large doses. Cannot find any position that doesn’t hurt.

Because of a reversal of fortune, like everybody else, I find myself on Medicaid. I’m used to having excellent health insurance with the ability to walk into any doctor’s office, so this is a new world to me.

So my questions are:

1) What is the best, sensible pain med y’all have found to cut this kind of pain and allow you to work? ( I have to work somehow) .
2) What is the best way to figure out what the heck is causing the problem and what to do about it? Emergency room? Chiropractor? Let the Medicaid doctor refer me to an unknown specialist?

Any advice would be appreciated. I’m aware that the Neurontin doesn’t help me to be at my cognitive best…. : )

  • I dont know about pain meds other than some people really need them and others just love them( ihave family that eats em like crazy).. So you gotta to find a medium on thats...

Doctors--well FIRST in MY OPINION a Doctos opnion is kinda worthless unless u get a MRI.. I have seen the best of the best and they always take the LEGAL route to protect themselves, but at the same time they do give an opinion.. AND LET ME EMPHASIVE (misspelled) MOST of their opinions are different.. I have had NEURO tell me i must have 3 level fusion... I had another tell me " Is that doctor crazy u dont have instability and your symtoms are livable) and I have had another orthopedic tell me he wants to do MED micro something surgery.. So they are all different.. My situation basically left leg scate and miserable for 5 months. now i am stable.. though i am 38 i protecgt myself like i am 70yo.. that is just the simple truth..

sorry i wish i could give u better advice but none has responded to u...

    so to recap
    1) get a MRI (tried to get a TESLA 3 MRI the imaging is better(forget a CAT SCAN)-- big issue wit the mri is that a doc can see if u have anything superserious like CES spine issues which is rare_
    2) then let 3 different nuero or orthos that specialize in spins look at you..
    3) if u can live with the symtoms try and deal with the pain for 6 months UNLESS u have bad numbness cause that means the nerve is dieing..
    4) take it easy dont push it

    good luck

Thank you so much for your response. I went to the local health clinic, here in the boondocks yesterday but they told me to go to the emergency room in the next city over. I'm arranging for care for my pets and house and going to the emergency room tommorrow. I will ask them for the kind of MRI you suggested. And will follow your good advice of getting three opinions.

Thank you so much for getting me focused.
