Wonderfully successful surgery in 1994 to correct footdrop and torturing pain left outer calf.

By walking and stretching I have done well.

In the last 6 months chronic severe pain when sitting and also lying flat. So everything I do I stand or kneel. Nearest pain clinic has a 2 year wait.

Any tricks for life when you cannot sit?

Also I am not good at explaining my pain..I was brought up British not to make a fuss. Hate going to doctors. Don't really like authority figures even though I am a teacher..lol.

Hard to teach music when you can't sit to play piano.

  • I had diskectomy about 5 years ago. I had difficulty sitting preop and still do. My pain is mostly in my tailbone when I sit and I also have Facet Arthropathy so it is hard to straighten up upon standing.
Sadly, my only choice is long term pain medications. I take Methadone daily and it does help quite a bit.

You really need to try and explain your pain to your doc or there may not be much that he/she is able to do for you.
Maybe you could write your symptoms down ahead of time to be better prepared for your visit.

    Good luck to you.

ETA- A 2 year wait for a Pain Clinic would be extremely difficult on a chronic pain patient. Do you have any other options?
  • Welcome to SH, but sorry that your pain brought you here.
I too have suffered with terrible pain with sitting. I had a discectomy/lami last July, and then an adr 2 1/2 months ago. Unfortunately' I still have extreme pain with sitting...was not relieved at all. I was originally scheduled to have a coccygectomy, but then they were hopeful that the adr might help.

Have you had any xrays or mri of your tailbone, or a recent lumbar mri? Do you have any radiating pain down your leg? Do you know how your L5/S1 is?

I too try to stand all the time, don't really have any tricks. The worst pain is when I first stand up after having to sit. Have you tried a donut type pillow to sit on? I use my heating pad alot and have tried injections for the pain.

I really feel for you, it is a terrible feeling.
Look forward to hearing more from you.

  • Do you live in Toronto? PM me I know of a Pain Management Center at a hospital and waited less than 4 months for an appt. I'm glad going there as I was getting blind injections before at another pain center. Here they use fluoroscopic x-ray.

I use a Backjoy it feels more comfortable when I sit and put my feet up on a small footstool to take the pressure off my back. I also have on my infrared platinum heating pad while sitting. All these things help with sitting. I also find when I hold in my abdomen it helps relieve the pain. I know you can't pull your abdomen in all the time but it helps to relieve the pain.

Not sure about laying down other than be on your side with a pillow between your legs and have a good mattress or memory foam topper,

I do these passive exercises for my back and seem to be helping with the pain. http://www.spine-health.com/video/sciatica-exercises-degenerative-disc-disease-video Charry
