Disc bulge from C4/5 to C6/7 level

Hello,

I always get stiff neck and sore shoulder and upper back in the morning. MRI for c spine shows -"Disc bulges are seen from C4/5 to C6/7 level with NO chord compression". All the other aspects in MRI are normal.

The doc(Neurologist) says, it's normal and protrusion is minor.

What shall I do?? I am very scared. Am I heading to some serious condition in coming time?

This is important for me because if I am going to meet something serious, I need prepare for finance from today.

I am 30 years old and work as a typist for a firm.

Please help!

    If your disks are only bulging that is a good thing :) Talk to your doctor and see if there is anything you can do to prevent them from rupturing, getting worse, or at least slow the bulging down. Or as some would say, try to heal the discs.

    For the stiff neck, back & shoulders I suggest you look at how you are sleeping and what you are sleeping on. Something as simple as a different pillow and/or mattress might help to relieve the pain and stiffness in the morning. You might be surprised at how much changing how you sleep, and what you sleep on can affect your neck and back.

    Other than that, I would follow up with the NS if things change dramatically, or at least once a year.

    I agree with Curt that thinking about your pillow and mattress is worth a try. I have problems in my neck which caused pain and often headaches in the morning and have found that a shaped cervical pillow has really helped me. If I sleep without it for any reason, I am always sorry the next day. My problems are more serious than yours and will probably need surgery in the future, but I have been told not to see a Chiropractor or Osteopath for manipulation.

    The fact that you are a typist makes me think that you should check the ergometrics of your work place. Also, try to take regular breaks during the day when you can get up and take a walk and lift your head and move it. Perhaps there are some excercises that you can do, but do get expert advice.

    I see a physiotherapist every week and he does facet joint mobilisation treatments to keep my neck as mobile as possible. I also do very gentle exercises twice a day; once in the morning in the warm shower and then again in the evening. I have compression of my cord at two levels, so my excersises are very gentle just to keep it mobile. My neurosurgeon has given the ok to this. Perhaps some visits with a physio would help you too. They would help you to think of your posture to avoid that being a problem.

    I hope that you will find this a friendly place where you can meet other with similar problems and you will learn a lot about spinal / cervical problems and how to help yourself.

    I am very scared, probably because I never expected this and I was not prepared for this.

    I would be very thankful to you if you can answer one simple question to me-"How much time I have before I confront something serious like surgery given that I keep on doing the same job (typist)?"

    I mean, how much time does it take for a disc to become ruptured from a state of minor protrusion?

    The answer to this will help me manage things better in my life. If things come on me without prior notice, I may not be able to even buy medicines. Hope you understand!
  • They can teach you exercises to strengthen the muscles around your neck and hopefully prevent any further issues.
    Minor bulges are normal but if you compensate for the sore neck without strengthing the muscles you can over time cause more issues.
    Agree with the ergonomics of your workspace and with frequent breaks.
    I don't know the exact statistic but somewhere around 80% of americans will experience neck or back pain in their lives. Most don't need treatment or surgery. Here's to hoping that you one of the normal ones....

  • I wish there was a way to know in advance when a disc, or discs will go bad. I initially injured my neck in 2001 and continued to abuse it until my right arm went numb and partially paralyzed "Without prior notice" in 2011. Then again I was in law enforcement which can be very physically demanding.

    Will the same happen to you? No one can honestly answer that question. As already mentioned, the best you can do is strengthen your neck to help stabilize the spine, adjust how you sleep or lounge when not working and check out how to make your work station more neck and back friendly.

    And learn about bulging discs and how to possibly minimize any further deterioration / damage.

    I was admin asst for 22 yr career desk/computer full-time. Re: disc bulges and ??? on degen and possible rupture

    Most of spine ruptures can occur with either injury, too much trauma, lifting heavy loads, physical injury, sports, mva's motor vehicle accidents. All of which weaken, discs injure them further and cause havoc for ligaments, neuro-muscular tissue as well. Also some are biologically pre-destined prior to any trauma or injury to arthritis and degenerative disorders. After the above injuries & trauma you are highly capable unfortunately of having arthritic conditions and degeneration progression, all of which affect discs, neuro-muscular integrity of your spine.

    I was 30 yrs old when I began having MRI's & showing DDD degen disc disease, and I was pre-disposed with deformity of C-1/2 from birth.

    Two car accidents, one being serious broadside collision over 50 mph set me up for being progressive degen, but it was 12 yrs later at 42 before I had severe compression of 2 discs degen'g and bone spurs encroaching spinal cord. It was thecal sac and into canal touching cord, not impingement & numbness in fingers went to whole hand, arm numbness symptoms in those 12 yrs.

    Smart function with those disc bulges can give you more mileage - - no heavy lifting 10 lbs or more, good ergodynamics, desk work, computer, arms, shoulders, neck bracing as progressive symptoms begin, avoid falls, injuries.

    fyi I have had lumbar disc bulges 2 levels symptomatic since my mid 20's mild bulges, now have 3 levels disc bulges, 2 levels went from moderate to advance, and no surgery 40 yrs later, do r.f.a's radio freq ablation by experienced Pain Management Anethetist - - free of pain & good function (except when overdoing, lifting, no longer & mva's unfortunately unavoidable.) RFA's are lumbar only, but just to give you sense of disc bulges and degeneration and ways to function.

    Hope this helps give you a forecast of disc bulges as I have learned and lived with them for 43 yrs = = I am 63 yrs young :) !


  • Aqua-Therapy (warm water pool movement/stretch/exercise program) can be terrific for C-Spine people and disc bulges to keep function without stress and strain the weight resistance equipment can have at times and causing reactive muscle/ligament/nerve inflammatory problems for some people.
    Fibromyalgia, Arthritics, Multiple Sclerosis, Regional Pain Disorder, etc.

    Great after injuries, mva's progressive degeneration.

    Keeps muscle/ligaments healthy & moving with straining discs/joints :)

    What you said gave me more relief than pills could do. I am able to breath now.

    Today I met with PT. She says that disc bulges would heal over time but NS says, they wont heal as such.

    So do they really heal?? As Joydancer said that she had them from 20's means they dont heal.

    Did the miracle happen for anyone??

    BTW, I feel pain in upperback while my neck feels just stiff, no pain in neck as such. So shall I get a MRI done for Thoracic? or the upperback may be the result of disc protrusion in c spine??
