Physical therapy after microdiscectomy

Hi all I had a microd l5/s1 going on six weeks tomorrow. I had chronic symptoms for a while before an acute flareup started in February. My surgeon, whom I saw two weeks after surgery, had me start PT last week. My PT (who has lots of experience with backs) is adamant that I should start increasing my mobility immediately. She has me doing things I would otherwise not be doing... such as more bending. My question is this - while the nerve pain in the leg is more or less gone except after a tough stretching session, I have a lot of stiffness in my back, especially after driving or sitting. I also walk between 3 and 6 miles a day. I would be curious to hear how other people are doing. Is this normal?

  • I would imagine if you have been walking and doing PT that some of this stiffness is due to overdoing the PT. Talk to them about scaling it back a little. I was only 8 days out from my L5/S1 Microdiscectemy and was doing great when I started with headaches due to a dural tear and spinal fluid leak. Remember take it easy on your body.give it lots of time to heal.
