I am new to this forum but have enjoyed reading the advice given over the last several years. I have been in chronic lower back pain for well over 25 years. As a former electrical contractor I believe my profession certainly didn’t help. Over the years I have tried Chiropractors, PT, epidurals and different meds with no relief. Four and half years ago it was so bad that I could barely get out of the car. After visiting a orthopedic surgeon and more than a few MRI’s it was decided to do a level one fusion on L4-L5. I did recoup from the operation but the pain continued to this day getting worse over years. I am retired and not working but do stay active. I have been on hydrocodon but it doesn’t seem to do much.
I had another MRI about 5 months ago and revisited the orthopedic surgeon again. It seems that there are multiple issues that could be causing the pain but yet when I asked the doctor how he was going to decide exactly where is the pain coming from…he didn’t have an answer. He just wanted to do another major operation. When I said I wasn’t ready for another operation (had prostate cancer operation 1 year ago) he said the only other thing to do was epidurals which I know did not work for me. I really liked this doctor up to this point but decided we needed to part company. From all the reading and research I have done it now seemed that the best doctor at this point would be a neurologist.
Getting back to my original question…how did you pick your doctor? Again I did tons of research, found many neurologists. Some did not take insurance at all. Some did not take my insurance and many did not seem to have great qualifications. Well, I finally found a great neurologist with a great reputation who is the medical director of a Neuroscience Center and Spine Center, also part of a reputable hospital. And yes he takes my insurance. There is only one issue. His first appointment is in four months. I feel at this point it is worth waiting for since he is in the top 1% of neurologists in the country. What would you do?
Thanks in advance for any opinions that could help me. I appreciate it.
