Long-term Cymbalta use and Platelet Deficiency???

I've been taking Cymbalta, 60mg twice a day, for almost a year now. I finally was cleared to have a SCS implanted in April and was ecstatic! Imagine my disdain when I was told I could not have surgery because my platelets were ever so slightly below what is required for surgery. At the time the count was 115/116. Apparently the minimum allowed was literally 1-2 points higher. I had them checked again a week or so ago and they're now at 110. I'm waiting to get an appointment with a hematologist, but after waiting more than a month I've started doing my own research (my PM said they'd "look into it" for me but of course that has been long forgotten).

Aside from this possible side-effect, I've had it with the PROFUSE night time sweating, inability to think/remember and dips in moood. I have asked my PM to taper me off it but they won't prescribe 30mg capsules until I get an appointment. And, you guessed it, I still haven't gotten an appointment. So, I'm tapering on my own, down to 1 60 mg tablet a day. I went through withdrawal all Memorial Day weekend, but am feeling much better. The headaches and runny nose are subsiding and I'm feeling better.

Has anyone else experienced a drop in platelets and/or red blood cells while taking Cymbalta? I'm pretty desperate to find out why the hell my blood count is off. It's so hard to be told you'll finally get a life-changing procedure done, only to be denied it based on a legal technicality.

Any insight is much appreciated. Thx :)

  • Please...if anyone has any info I really could use it.
  • I have been on 60 mg for over two years. When I went in for an injection for cervical they did a bleeding test and the platlets came back low. I talked to the surgeon and he went ahead with the injection because of the side effects if I was to try and stop taking cymbalta.
My Primary Dr has warned me about taking any NSAIDs while i am on Cymbalta as it increases the likelihood of bleeding.
Funny thing that just a month ago they repeated the test for another nerve block and it came back within the normal limits.

  • Aside from something really bad that would cause low platelets, i.e. cancer, I cannot figure out what else it would be. I've gotten no help from my PM and am still waiting on an appt with a hematologist. But I think weaning myself off the Cymbalta is a good first step. If anyone else has experienced this please post.
