Sharp pain when inhaling

I'm new to the forum and didn't see a question regarding pain upon breathing. Not sure what's going on...thought it was a rib out and went to the chiro. Usually works wonders...not this time, so gave it a week and then went back. Still no relief. Have never had this particular pain before. When I breathe it hurts...and anytime that I have to take a deep breath...cough, sneeze, etc. It's centered next to my spine on the right side between spine and shoulder blade area. Super painful if you press on that area. No pain when I am flat on my back. No pain when I sit or stand and bend over and drop my arms. Constant pain when I breathe in...and worse when it's a deep breath.

No real injury that I can remember... though I did pull the cord on the lawnmower and gave it a good jerk...and the cord jammed so my shoulder got a pretty good jolt resulting in a sore area right at the head of the right shoulder. That's mostly gone away now after about 4 weeks. The other has not...it feels like what people say a cracked rib feels like.

Ready to go to my regular internist to at least get an x-ray or something. Anyone had this particular situation before?

Oh...and I had cervical spine surgery about a dozen years ago.

Thanks for your help.

  • I would go get checked out and maybe get an anti-inflammatory to help especially when you have pain when your press on the area. Icing may help in the meantime. I have had Costochondritis and it sounds similar as it hurt when pressed on but of course we can't diagnose anything just sharing my experience. I don't have any thoracic issues just lumbar and cervical mainly. Any shortness of breath get checked out right away. Keep us posted. Take care. Charry
