Post Surgery Hospital Stay

Hi all, I was told I would be in hospital overnight after my surgery ACDF C5-6, I have 4 cervical disc herniations with severe DDD, DJD bone spurs and others. My neuro is only fusing one level at this time, I received phone call from neuro office and the nurse said my hospital stay would be 2-3 days or more because everyone is different. I have asthma and other respiratory ailments but the neuro knew that on my first visit when I was told by him and the nurse my stay would only be overnight. I would like to know if this happened to anyone else, I know Vin had a long stay but for other reasons. I am a little confused because the neuro and his nurse first told me only one night stay in hospital but are now saying 2-3 days. Thanks all and God Bless, Joe

I think the surgeon wants to be on the conservative side and tell you the stay will be longer. Perhaps they may end up letting you go earlier. When again is your surgery? I wanted to wish you a successful surgery and recovery. Know that recovery can be a rough ride, but don't let it get you down. I am so glad I had my surgery and I wish that your symptoms will get better afterwards. Best wishes to you!!!

  • Hi Lili, thanks for taking the time to reply and for your kind words while my mother was sick. My surgery is July 10th, when I spoke with the nurse today and mentioned that I was told one night she almost seemed surprised. I guess with all of the patients they see it's difficult to remember one conversation. Joe

  • That was what a RA doctor once told me. Sometimes I find that when I go and visit my doctor, they don't remember what my condition is and I have to forgive them because they see so many of us in one day. If I remember, your surgeon is very experienced and will take good care of you. Rest assured that you will do well and trust your surgeon's abilities. The rest is insignificant. You always have a friend to lean on! ;)

  • i think i got differing numbers of days in the hospital for my acdf. i know i got varying numbers for my plif (which was a week ago.)

i can say as of the actual surgery, i was told overnight in the hospital. but i was also told i would spend the entire night in recovery to be monitored. in the end, i stayed overnight 2 nights after the surgery due to complications from anesthesia.

if i were you, i would hope for overnight, but be prepared for an extra day or two. alot of it depends on how you feel afterwards, how quickly you bounce back from the anesthesia, etc.

but it is possible to go home after one night. i think age also factors into alot of this.

    good luck with the surgery.

  • I had a 1 level acdf and was told I would be in the hospital 1-2 nights. In preop the surgeon said I could go home that day. I basicly freaked out because its a far car ride and he said ok one night should be good. That was enough.

  • i had my op on c5/6/7 about 6 weeks ago, i was told i would be in hosp for at least 5 days,

i am diabetic as well. i went in the night before to monitor my blood sugar, was told i would be in high care ward for two nights then back to spine ward.

i had the op and was on my way home the very next day, didnt even get to a spine ward! (mind i think the hosp was short of beds but i was pleased to recover at home).

everyone is different, but i did have someone at home to help me otherwise they wouldnt have discharged me....

good luck, go with the flo and look forward to this time being history! :-)
  • My neuro told me that he keeps patients in ICU for at least one night, then one day per level on the neuro/spine ward if everything goes perfectly, so my 3 level will wind up being a 4 day stay. I was also told that it depends on how the patient responds to the surgery, how much your ability to swallow is impacted, and how quickly they're able to use the bathroom on their own, walk 200ft unassisted, etc. Using those guidelines, my neuro would have you in hospital for 2 days, plus or minus depending on how you were doing post surg.
Will be keeping you in my thoughts & prayers on the 10th!
