Micro decompression

I have three areas in my back that I am told need micro decompression lumbar stenios handling by a surgeon. I have been on pain mess for years but have now reached the point of so much frustration because of pain and also have a pain tolerance which I do not care for, however I am not going to live my life in chronic pain 24/7! I'm being told by a surgeon to get this micro donr, that it will only take 6 weeks to recover, that I will probably have less pain. I have also been told that I will be in the hospital for 2 nights because of the pain control I will need. The reason I didn't handle this sooner is I had no health insurance for three years, my husband died and here I am again trying to figure out a handling for my back. I had three IDEC procedures done on me in the early 1990's that were found to fail. I just don't know if I will get better if I have the micro decompression or any relief at all. Anyone know?

  • does this surgery work?
  • Hi artistinpain, I had microdiscectomy or decompression on T7-T8 on May 24 and was told by my surgeon pre-op that I would probably be back at work at least light duty within 2 weeks. Well it has been 8 weeks and am out of work indefinitely and haven't been able to do PT yet due to complications and worsening pain. I wish my surgeon had just kept that bit of info about recovery to himself. When I seen him last week he said it may take 9-12 months for recovery. Everyone is different and recovery is different for everyone. Are your spine problems in cervical, thoracic or lumbar or combination? What kind of symptoms do you have? I have moderate to severe disc problems in lumbar and had 3 surgeries, 1994 and 2 in 2008 and have done well with those so far. I wish you well and please let me know what decision you decide on. Please feel free to PM me anytime since I am on here day and night...lol

  • hi, thanks for the hugs, yes I am concerned about doing this procedure even though it is a top dog surgeon at Stanford. The plan is to go into three areas of where the herniated discs are all in the L2-L5 area. I have a narrowing just @ the ther sac and the spinal cord is pushing Down as there is no room. The numbs, nerve pain, shooting sparks burring hot and cold feet has been going on for about 4 years and it is 24/7 . Very uncomfortable. I do waking, tried swimming and it blew up ie fls
Ares big time and then I have to take strong mess to decrease the pain and I just don't make it for a full day, haven't worked for years. Had ore iOS noninvasive procedures done on me in the 90's called the IDEC but that was known to fail in the back doctor world.I've been to specialists in europe, east and west coast, very frustrating! I was hoping that this procedure might make me better as I hate taking all these pain meds but I'm doubtful on this new procedue especiallythe recovery. I know it will take more then 6 weeks! My body isn't 20 yes old
