Hello. First time poster

My name is Henry Janis and I am a 28 year old EMT who was working towards the fire service in Chicago, Illinois. I injured myself in November of last year. Two herniated discs, L4-L5 and the ever popular L5-S1. I had a microdiscectomy that did not work because the nerved had been damaged and scar tissue built up which is essentially causing stenosis. Did about 15 weeks of PT, prior to and after the microdiscectomy, had just recently had an epidural steroid injection (Which didn't work). The shot actually made it worse and I am just writing to get peoples opinions on fusions. I am VERY worried that due to my career the fusion could harm me in the long run. I am in the process of researching and talking to other MDs and Surgeons just for different opinions. How did you feel about your fusions? I am just very anxious as I have been hurting since November. It is very discouraging when even getting out of bed is a challenge. I welcome and appreciate all of your input. If I put this in the wrong forum area I apologize.

Henry Janis.

  • I have been fused twice. The first on February 9th (L4-5) and the second on June 24th(L3-4) of this year. I could be having L5-S1 fused in the future. I find out next week if I am having another fusion. Overall, I feel my fusions turned out well. I did have some pain the first few weeks, but now its nothing I can't handle. I rarely take pain meds, If I do its right before bed. Laying down is my most painful time. I currently have to sleep in a recliner cause of the symptoms of my herniated disc. I believe my fusions turned out well so far. I don't even have to go to PT. You will see on the everyone has their own individual experiences with their fusions. Everyone's pain level is different, some have leg pain, many take several meds, Everyone heals different.
Discectomies 05/08 and 04/11, fusions L4-5 Feb 9,2012 and L3-L4 June 28,2012, Staph infection washout 3/2/2012, Bulged L5-S1. SCS trial on January 17th, 2014, which was a success! Permanent SCS on February 20th.
