Why hasn't there been any usage
- Not working for some ( there is that Java requirement , if you get the pop up)
- The new CHAT is not easy to use
- There is never anyone there
- No Interest anymore
When Spine-Health was upgrade this year, the CHAT room as we knew it was no longer available.
Flashchat was the software package that Spine-Health had been using for over 8 years It was an
easy to use. On the old PunBB Spine-Health site, easy to install and upgrade. On Drupal, it became
a bear to install and maintain. The Flashchat folks never intended the package to run on any Drupal platform.
The Flashchat cost was reasonable.... $5 to anyone. That was $5 to the entire Spine-Health organization with over 15,000 members (at the time) and $5 to my own forum Web site with about 25 members. So, we can not look back anymore.
When the system was recently upgraded and the new CHAT installed, there were some Java problems, depending on what level of Java your browser was using. If CHAT failed, you would get a pop-up window that gave you instructions on where to get the required upgrade. Since then, I have not heard of many people that failed just trying to start chat... Or have they not reported it?
I've been to the new CHAT room, configured it for the fonts, colors and window size of my liking. But like many others, I didnt find many people going into CHAT. I check it out daily now and have never find anyone in CHAT.
Why is that?
We really like to better understand why CHAT is not being used. I know a few people even tried to set up
time schedules for others to follow.....
I can't speak for so many of the newer members, but way back when Spine-Health had about 3,000 members, we had an almost ritual every night 10:30(EST) CHAT session for several different time zones. We would have up to 25 people in one room at a time. It was fun, it was entertaining and for many of us, it became a lifeline, because for that short period of time we were in chat, we forgot about our medical problems. We rarely even talked about our conditions, instead we talked about everything from Food, Wine, Photos of Deer, Red High Heel shoes, and much more.
I'd love to see that type of CHAT room come back. We did have many CHAT problems from 2009 until 2011. Generally,
that was caused by one or two UN-happy, UN-rurely and down right nasty people creating havoc. That part of CHAT , I hope to never see again.
Laughter can be some very strong and effective medicine... Lets hope that more of you can experience that.
