unknown surgery?

My neighbor told me her grandson is getting an artificial disc, and a fusion with a mesh. The surgeon told him he could go back to light duty in 2 weeks, and no restriction after 6. She did not know what the procedure exactly was called, but said it was fairly new. Has anyone heard of this?

  • What part of the spine are you talking about? Some surgeons are a little over zealous when telling patients how long they will be off, and make it sound like a cake walk. Now grant you there are people who do really really well. But typically when a surgeon is that confident, my gut says run. Hopefully he got a second and third opinion on the surgery? Using mesh has been around for awhile. Now the artificial disc, patients do recover faster from. Hopefully if it is a lumbar she understands if the disc fails, they can't get it out?
