Hi all, looking for advice on where I should be at about a week after surgery. I had major left leg pain, numbness & weakness for about 2 months after a car accident. MRI showed substantial bulges, and 5 minutes after I saw the surgeon for the first time, he had scheduled me in for just a couple of days later.
I had very little time to research anything, but I knew it wasn't going to get better with the conservative treatments I had been trying.
Anyways, post surgery I was in a lot of pain, the nurses were having trouble keeping it under control with Demerol, and wanted me to stay the night, but there were no beds. The resident tried to send me home with Tylenol 3's, which I refused, as they didn't even help for pain Pre-surgery. I ended up with Percocet, which I took as often as allowed, but still didn't help much. I didn't sleep that night, and called the surgeons office in the AM.
His response was that the Percocet wasn't working because I had probably developed a tolerance before surgery ( I had been on tramadol for 2 mo before surgery), and that if I still wasn't able to sleep after a week, to discuss it with my GP (who is unfortunately on vacation for a month, which I explained.) I have no history of using opiates or any kind of addictive issues.
I ended up in the ER that next night as I had maxed out the Percocet, but was pretty much hysterical with pain. I have been told on many occasions that i have a high threshold for pain. The incision was sore, but it was more the leg pain that had gotten worse in my left, and even gone a bit into my right. Thankfully, I was given morphine IV immediately, and enough to take home for a couple of days.
So the morphine is done, and I've now been just on the Percocet, which seems to run out way before the next dose. I am taking sleeping pills to try and get some sleep, but still wake up in a lot of pain.
The surgeon said the only rehab I can be doing us walking, which I've tried to do each day. I can only last about 5 min before I get dizzy and nauseous, and the pain is much worse afterwards.
Sorry for the novel - should I try calling the surgeon again, after he made it pretty clear that post op concerns werent high on his list of worries, or do I try to work with the doc that is covering for my GP, and doesn't know me at all?
Or am I just crazy and this is normal!?
