MY QUESTION IS: Has anyone else experienced hip pain after a Microdiscectomy, and if so what is it?
I had a Microdiscectomy 9 months ago on L5-S1. Took away a lot of my leg pain.
I still have a disc bulge at L4
I still have severe canal stenosis at L4 & L5
My first 2 months or so after surgery was ok. However, since then I have a bad pain in my hip area, and of coarse still have pain in my lower back.
Neurosurgeon said I didn't need physical therapy & dismissed me when I informed them of the hip pain. Told me I can go see an Ortho Surgeon.
Ortho Surgeon took X-ray and said he didn't see anything wrong with my hip and that he DID SEE the disc bulge at L4. Referred me to a physical medicine/rehabilitation specialist for an EMG.
The EMG revealed that I had some nerve damage on the S1 and that's the reason my toe was numb (I don't care about that, I can live with that).
During the testing I did inform her of my remaining conditions & that I have hip pain now. I asked her what can be done for the remaining conditions & the hip pain. I advised her I was only taking IB 800's for pain. She said there is nothing that can be done and that my back is only going to continue to get worse.
She suggested I take pain meds again. I told her ok only if it was some weaker stuff (prior to surgery I was taking 15 mg of Oxycodone every 4 hrs). She said ok and to make another appt to see her (2 days later) and that she could give me pain meds.
My 2nd visit with the physical medicine/rehabilitation specialist was confusing. She asked if in the past I had tried physical therapy and I said yes. It made me hurt worse. The she asked if I would be interested in trying an Epidural and I said yes! She then asked if I would be interested in some kind of pain patch. I told her I don't care, and that I just want to be out of pain. She asked if I could drive up there twice a wk for therapy (it's over an hour away & costs $25 in gas each trip-my only income is SSD) I advised her I could not afford to do that. So then she asked if there were any places near me, I said yes & she said go to 1 of them. Let it be known that I don't have insurance, I have Medicaid with a BS $1800.00 monthly share of cost, so I would have to pay out of pocket which I can't afford.
At the end of the visit, I once again reminded her where the pain was, and then she ordered an X-ray of my lower back. She gave me 1 month's worth of Lortab 5mg, told me to come back and see her in 2 months. I have to wait 2 months now to get the X-ray results?? EDIT And what am I supposed to do the next month while I'm waiting to see her?
*I hate taking pain meds cuz the way they make me feel.
*With IB 800's it doesn't help.
*The hip pain is terrible! Feels like someone is taking a seraded knife & stabbing me in the hip and twisting & other times it's an achy pain.
*She said nothing more about the pain patch or Epidural.
