Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my story and offer any advice or experience with a microdisectomy! I will try and keep this short!
I am a 29 year old male who had been suffering from sciatic pain in the left leg for ~6 months. I initially herniated my L5/S1 disc weight-lifting. I was attempting to do a dead lift and felt a sharp pain that radiated down my left leg. A trip to the ER and an MRI showed the herniation, I was referred to a back orthopedic who advised conservative treatment aka PT, pain killers, massage therapy and epidural steroid injections. My pain alleviated but never fully went away. Finally I could not tolerate this anymore, I wanted to get back to an active life and was depressed.
I saw a well respected neurosurgeon, was advised I needed an microdisectomy and had the operation done end of September. Days prior to the surgery my pain level was ~8 and immediately after the surgery I was pain free, it was amazing! I rested for about a week after the surgery and slowly got back into my routine (I do not physical type job so I could got back to work shortly about 2 weeks after the surgery. I was advised to start PT, but based on how well I was feeling I delayed starting (I know this was a bad decision).
About 3 weeks after the surgery I started to get minor/achy sciatic pain in my lower left buttocks and upper thigh. I was prescribe Ibuprofen and told this was due to inflammation/nerve healing. It is now about 6 weeks since the surgery and this pain has not gone away. I started PT last week, it seems as if some exercises trigger this pain.
I do not know what to expect time frame wise following this surgery and what type of pain are normal and what is not. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
