Disectomy laminectomy & L4/L5 fusion

After years of lower back pain and daily pain mess I am booked in to have this surgery 31 December 12. In 2005 I had a disectomy and nerve decompression this did help my leg pain but my lower back has continued to cause distress. My life has come to a stand still I can't stand straight bend sit or walk without pain I must rattle when I walk with the pills, lately I have little control over my bladder. I haven't had all hospital info yet what can I expect? How long roughly will I be in hospital? How long is recovery? All advice really appreciated thank you xx

  • I had this done back in 2006, L4-L5 S1. Two disks replaced and 2 level fusion. I had the anterior/posterior approach which was pretty rough. I'm sure things have changed a bit since my surgery. I was in the hospital for a couple of days, then a rehab center for a few more days, they want to make sure your bowels start moving again. I wish you the best of luck and hope that it will help you with your pain. I was moving again very quickly...
  • 8 days hospital
6 mths + recovery (4 mths now & not there yet - cant sit much) - many people say 12 mths for full recovery - fusion is major surgery

Lots of posts here for you to read.

What type of fusion are you going to get?
  • For your replies it's all happened a bit quick so I have been reading up I no it's a major op but I weigh up my options and it seems the only one as my life feels on hold i have just been confirmed on phone about date so dint have all paper work yet I don't know what type of fusion it is but will update as I go along. Thanks again x
