Severe pain turning over in bed

Just found this site and I am so happy to confirm I am not going completely insane! For the past 6 months I have been experiencing very sharp pain in my lower back and right hip. It wakes me up at night when I turn over in my sleep, My body is so rigid I have real trouble getting out of bed or if I have been sitting for a while. My only relief is to walk around all day, but as I get so little sleep I am exhausted during the day. I just dread going to bed.

My Dr has prescribed all sorts of medication and nothing works, he is finally sending me to a specialist but the appt is not until February. I should live so long!


  • Had any MRIs or xrays of your spine? Oftentimes, disc problems in your spine can cause intense pain in your back and legs if you do a little twisting during the night. Get some tests done. All the pain meds and muscle relaxants in the world won't really help if you've got a disc squishing your nerves.
    3 level spinal fusion, L3/4, L4/5, L5/S1, November 2008. Stiff, but I can walk.
  • This sounds a lot like what my dad used to go through. Undoubtedly the most frustrating thing is that you have to wait so long for an appointment, what do you do till then?!?!?!? I agree that meds etc can only be stopgaps, temporary lapses from the pain so maybe look at things that are a little more systemic. Perhaps switch your bed to something more supportive, as the best memory foam mattress should stop you moving around. I'd think about maybe changing your sleep pattern. If it fits with your lifestyle, instead of going for a long haul 7/8 hour sleep where interruptions are likely, maybe have 3 2.5 hour naps during the day to maintain your freshness and get your sleep?
  • an electrically adjustable bed with a decent mattress would help .i sleep with a pillow in between my knees and use a tempur millenium queen pillow for my head .i can use the electrical rise bit of the bed to help me get out of it and it help with turning because you can get to the sat up position or anywhere in between so it make turning a little easier but it still hurts ..i am afraid a bad back is for life ..not just christmas ! .if you are going to buy a new bed have a look at the dormeo octaspring mattress it the new generation memory foam its nothing like the normal memory foam its various density 8 sided memory foam ;;springs;; there are no steel springs in the mattress its all memory foam and unbelievably comfy and cool unlike some solid memory foam beds ...you could sleep with a TENS machine on too that could help with pain ..i have been fighting back pain for 16 years now and i know how hard it is to live with .i have tried everything including 3 major operations and many spinal injections .but i am still in pain ..others are a bit luckier

  • I thought this was my old post that someone commented on.
    First, do you have a history of back pain, issues or prior surgery?
    Have you been to a specialist like an orthopedic spine surgeon or neurosurgeon? I ask because if you feel as if you are that rigid, may be worth a visit. If you have to deal with insurance, what does your primary care physician say? Have you tried Physical Therapy? is it only when you are lying down for a period of time?
    I also agree...any chance your mattress is the issue? A memory foam mattress like a temperapedic (or less expensive version) did wonders for my husband's back and actually mine for a bit.

    Okay...why do I think it was me?
    Well, I had 2 lower back surgeries so I can't say for your it sounds like my old post but the subject line did. About a year after my 2nd back surgery, I was having excruciating pain sleeping. Actually if I was laying down for about 15-20 minutes or more, I would just stiffen up. Almost was thinking I was arthritic. I dealt with it for almost 6-7 months. I would go to turn over and just grit my teeth through the pain. I didn't want to make a noise b/c I didn't want to wake up my husband. I would try to sleep on the couch, in the spare bedroom (at first I thought it was the mattress), drink water so I would have to get up after 3 hours to move around (but actually didn't matter...had trouble moving after about 20 min). It would take ma a good 15 minutes to be able to stand someone upright b/c the pain was so bad.

    I finally went to my doctor. Because of my history, they sent me for an MRI to be sure nothing else was wrong. Luckily there wasn't. Just a lot of stiffness and scar tissue. I spent 3 months at a Physiatrist (muscular/skeletal doctor) and his PT team. They told me I had indeed lost a lot of mobility and that my left vs. right side and some issues with relative equal strength. The first month that helped me with new stretches and strenthening tailored to each side of my body. My sleeping was still an issue. Then then spent a month trying to just get my muscles in my left hip to stretch and a few other things. THey thought they were making progress but I still was not sleeping. Finally when the PT got a better understanding one day. He said that I came in first thing in the morning and was still limited motion, he worked with me to get me in good shape by the end of 45 min and then put me on my back on heat and a stim machine...and in 10 min I couldn't move again and he said that I was exactly as bad as when I walked in 45 min prior. I told him that yes, that's what happens at home. Well, it clicked...and we changed plans. I stopped sleeping on my back and they showed me many other exercises to stretch out my front hip flexors (or whatever). I've been sleeping well since May and it is amazing.

    Do not underestimate sleep.
    1 - check your mattress....if it's old, consider a new one
    2- look at your sleeping patterns...do you sleep on your stomach only? back only? side only? If so, use a pillow between under your legs. IF you only sleep in one direction, maybe try to force yourself to change it up. It take work but can be done. I've had to teach myself a few different ways to and not to sleep.
    3 - talk to your doctor. IF you have not visited a PT, maybe it's a good time to try.

    Mmm, me too. I get frequent treatments from my chiro and physio, and the loosening up of the joints removes the pain for a few days.
    But it always comes back. Sleeping, as you say, is very difficult. I tend to lie awake for a long time; when I do doze off I wake every few minutes to move around.

    My spine is just worn, I guess (67 years), and I've lost muscle tone, so I think it will gradually get worse. The less you do and the less sleep you have, the more the muscles lose tone. That increases stress on the joints and so it goes on.

    Anyway, get a physio to gently loosen up the lower spine. Takes about 20 minutes. A massage afterwards would be a good idea, too.

    Sore back is extremely common, so you are not alone.
