Hi all. I found this forum while doing some research on a possible upcoming surgery. I'm not really a spine expert so please forgive me if my terminology isn't exactly correct. A little of my history is that I injured my lower back in high school football back in 1970. The pain got so severe in the mid 1980s that I seriously contemplated suicide because I couldn't really be a father to my two small sons. I had a lot of pain until in desperation I got a fusion of L4,L5,and S1 in 1987 (1). The hardware was removed and cadaver bone added to the fusion in 1989 (2). I was nearly pain free for a little over 20 years (can't complain about that heh?). Life was good. About 6 years ago I had a laminectomy (3) but for the life of me I can't remember exactly where, but it was lumbar. Exactly 6 weeks after that I had a synovial cyst removed from my spine (4). Again, I can't remember exactly where, but it too was lumbar. My old fusion is still fine, but now it seems I have degeneration of L1 and L2. I have a lot of lower back pain, leg pain and now pain in places I'm not crazy about talking about, you know, private parts. Anyway I've been going to a pain specialist and getting steroid injections for about the past two years about every 3 to 4 months. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Last week I saw a neurosurgeon who after seeing my latest MRI suggested a L1-L2 fusion. After looking online I see that doesn't really have a great reputation, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this point. I still have to go to work every day, and that is getting very difficult. Well that's my intro. I'll be searching and reading and soon will be asking some direct questions. This looks like the place for good info.

i am sorry that you are contemplating more surgery . don't worry about talking about you private part we don't care on here i mention that fact that at just 46 my bits no longer work [in the married sense] due to nerve problems caused by poor quality surgery ..so if you have a problems don't be afraid to mention it if you are worried because some one may have an answer for you .more surgery for anyone in no fun .i have had 3 over the last 16 years the last was ALIF last years dec 29 .and i am still in hell with the pain and other problems ..anyway just wanted to say hi and good luck with any surgery
    1997 laminectomy
2007 repeat laminectomy and discectomy L4/L5
    2011 ALIF {L4/L5/S1}
2012 ? bowel problems .still under investigation
    2014 bladder operation may 19th 2014
  • Good 20 years pain free after your previous fusion of the l4l5 and s1 sounds you got pretty lucky ,
Its posible at some point or another the above level finaly started to give out with the stress being put on it for so long,

With some luck they can fix the above levels as well and you will do just as good as your previous fusion,
Some people seem to do ok with multiple levels being fused,
I am just 1 of the unlucky ones with only 1 level l4l5 artificial disc replacement causing complications so ended up fusing it and for the life of me cant recover from it due to nerve damage and who knows whats causing all the other leg pain and also groin pain as you describe,

All the nerves are connected so i think many of us with back issues know how as nerves get inflamed cause pain to go in the the groin and of course causes pain in the privates, Well we dont have to call it privates lets just call it what it is,
Whats the medical term , oh ye now i remember my nuts are killing me ! I am sure i am not the only one who walks many times like if i just got off of a horse especialy during a flare up !

Often people speak of how painful it can be at times to have sex which i think most complaint dont always just refer to the back pain itself but the nerves being inflammed causes pain at other points,
So of course having sex can be painful but at the same time as doctors always say is good exercise !
This is why when doctor asks me do you do any kind of exercise despite your spine trouble and nerve damage ?
I say yes i try to have sex at least once a week,

But i have missed now at least 3 weeks of exercise as my blow up doll is out for repair , Wonder if i can sue them for malpractice taking so long and it causing my condition to worsen ,
    Ok enough about me,

Just wanted to say welcome and best of luck in finding the best solution to your spine issue,
Let us know what decision you made about surgery and how it all goes,

    Best wishes,
Flexicore ADR 2004 resulting nerve damage l4l5 Fusion 2006 same level, 2009 hardware removal with lami !
