Had a laminotomy and microdiskectomy a week ago. Before surgery I was in so much pain and could not walk. I was in a wheel chair for a month before surgery. The surgeon said I would be out of the hospital the next day. I experienced so much pain that I was in for four days and now I am in a rehab. Center. I am walking some with a walker and doing exercises. Is this recovery normal? I still am taking diladiid for pain and working with the physical therapist. I need help getting up and walking...

    Harmonyjpc, welcome here.

    As you browse around this site, you will find plenty of good medical articles and videos, plus the member forums. I suggest you look over the Forum rules and go through the FAQ.

    Is it normal to spend 4 days in hospital and be sent to rehab when surgeon said 1 day and then home? Well, the answers in the question!

    But we don't have much background or details to give you comments on. A number of questions come to mind, such as;

    Was your nerve damaged before the surgery? Was an EMG / nerve conduction study done? Was an MRI or neurography scan done? If so, what did it say in summary? Do you have burning, tingling, pins and needles, numbness in leg before or after surgery? What did the surgeon find in there?

    Walking with a walker at 5 days is not brilliant but is going in the right direction. Better than before. Where would you be without the surgery?

    Taking opiates at day 5 is normal, allows you to heal without (hopefully) pain. The incision is fresh. This is major surgery you've just had.

    Doing PT is good and not unusual.

    You nerve has probably take a hiding whilst you were trying walk on it. It's healing now. Nerve healing can take a long time. Sometimes a few weeks other times.... Let's concentrate on getting mobile now!

    Hope you give us more info.

    Take care.
