Hip Sciatic Pain

I've had lower back pain for 2.5 years now and in the last 6 months I have been getting sciatic pain in the buttocks. In the last couple of weeks the front of my right hip feels pinched and makes it painful to stand on/walk.....
Physio seems to think this is caused by the thoracic spine but I have no idea.

Anyone else have this pain? What part of the spine causes this sciatic pain?

  • Welcome to spine health. I have issues in my lumbar and coccyx and have most of my pain in the buttocks and hips. My doctor's think that my pain is radiating from my low back into hips and buttocks. I also have nerve damage which causes total numbness in left foot and partial in outer calf.

Have you been to see a fellowship trained ortho or neurosurgeon? Have you bad any test, xrays, mri, etc? Do you have any pain, tingling, or numbness in your legs? Are you taking any nerve medication( Lyrica, Nuerontin, Cymbalta) ?

Hope that you can see a specialist to find out the cause and get treatment.

  • Sorry to hear about your troubles - anything help?
I have had x-rays, Ct scans and an MRI. The scans showed pretty much nothing apart from 3 minor buldging discs and facet joint inflammation on the left and right sides. I don't get tingling or foot numbess but I feel that this is where it is headed. I dont take any medication and the doc has never really talked about it. I see him again in 2 weeks and will try to get a referral to a specialist. It has been put off cos the doc thinks im too young to see a specialist - im nearly 25.
  • Always sad to hear when doctors say a patient is too young for referrals, tests, meds, surgery. Pain is pain, regardless of age. I really hope that you are able to see a specialist. Do you find that heat/cold tens help? Are your bulging discs and facet inflammation In your lumbar or thoracic spine?

Unfortunately for myself I have not found much relief after 2 surgeries, but rely on meds, heat, tens to get through the day.

Have you tried physio? Wishing you the best at your next appointment, 2.5 years is too long to not be able to see a specialist.

  • Its very frustrating....
Yes the back responds well to heat and lying down or walking - sitting is the worst. Discs and Facet problems are all in the lumbar spine - I had two facet blocks two weeks ago and i've seen very little improvement. I've done pyhsio, pilates, massage, schenar therapy, bowen therapy and tried to stay fit with walking and swimming (cant swim though as the back gets too sore). None of these treatmnets provide any relief.

Thank you very much for your kind words - I'm hoping the doctor might finally let me see a specialist. I feel I've tried everything and it's only getting worse.
  • i also get hip pain on the right side. i've had it for maybe 2 years now. sometimes it gets a little better, right now its been pretty bad. i had an MRI of my hip back when it first started bothering me and there was nothing there. but i did have a herniated disc at l5-s1, i've had 2 microdisecomties, and a fusion at l5-s1 now, and i still get hip pain. but i also still get some sciatic pain down the back of my right thigh. i had nerve compression for well over 2 years before i had the fusion, so the odds are, alot of my pain is permanent now. i wish i could blame the hip pain on something else, but the MRI confirmed, there is no hip problem. so i blame it all on my back, and i just deal with it.
