My name is Olivia and I am 25 years old. When I was 18, I found out that I had a slipped disc (L5) and underwent some chiropractic treatment. I also found out that I had mild scoliosis but nothing major. Fast forward 4 years and I was rear-ended, about a month after that I had severe pain down my left leg and in my lower back so I saw a chiropractor again, said that my disc slipped more and was pinching my sciatic nerve- I had chiropractic treatment for about a year before realizing that it wasn't working. So, I stopped treatment altogether. However, about 2 years ago the pain kept progressively getting worse and I couldn't handle it so I went to an orthopedic surgeon- he ordered an MRI and here is what it says: "There is a loss of disc space height and signal, dessiccation at L5-S1 with L5 anterior to S1 spondylolisthesis, with left L5 pars spondylolysis. The L5-S1 disc is uncovered posteriorly and there is a large left posterior paracentral disc herniation projecting into the left lateral recess and left foramen, encroaching upon passing S1 nerve root and exiting L5 nerve root." He put me on some different medicine and ordered me to get physical therapy- all with NO success. I then went and got a series of three epidural corticosteroid injections all without ANY relief. So, last Friday I went back for a follow up and he is recommending me see the surgeon in the office to get the opinion. His concern is the fracture, that I already have nerve damage and the constant pain!
I have an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon on the 27th of Feb and I made an appointment with a highly referred neurosurgeon on the 26th of Feb. I am wondering if you all have any recommendations or advice as I enter into these appointments? I need to hear the pros and cons, and the what ifs. Also, my husband and I want to start having children in about a year and I am wondering how having the surgery or not having the surgery will affect this process?!
Any advice/encouragement/recommendations are appreciated!!
