C 5,6,7 fusion pain, numbness, tingling ex...

I was in an auto accident 4/03/11..I missed an L shaped curve and jumped a hill landing upside down in my town n country mini van. After I checked myself out and realized I was upside down I unbuckled my seat belt and found a sliding door I could opened. I finally made my way to the road, my head and left arm was bleeding and I couldn't pick my right arm up. A couple stopped and called my boyfriend and a short time later a jeep stopped with off duty millitary men I can't thank these people enough I live in a very rural area and was fortunate they came by.. When the ambulance arrived the paramedic told me she had picked up several people on this curve.. When I made it to the ER the nurse was assessing me I told her I couldn't move my right arm and i was having dificulty catching my breathe. She immediately went to get the Dr they rushed me to get a scan.. It reveled I had crushed my C 6,7 vertabrae and I had stretched my artery in my neck so bad it had fraed internally and set up a blood clot.. Before they they could operate my artery had to heal so I was put on blood thinners.. On 4/08/11 they operated I was terrified but knew it had to be done, fragments of bone was actually in my spinal fluid. The Doctors replaced my C 6,7 with cadaver bone and fused C5,6,7 together and placed a titanium plate with 6 screws to secure them. They were considering a halo but decided to just let me wear a neck brace (collar) instead. I spent 12 days in the step down unit from ICU, I felt very lonely I could only see my family an hour twice a day but I also felt very blessed two other patients who had also sufferd broken necks and were paralysed.. I have had pain, numbness, and tingling, in my neck and right arm I have tremors in my hand especially when i try and concentrate on useing it.. I am on loratab, flexeril, lyrica and a Tens Unit I've also started taking celexa for depression. I was a casino table games dealer for about 12 years but of course can no longer deal cards just the standing and reaching would do me in.. I have tried a partime desk job but could no longer type and sitting to long was painful. Then I got a job at a cellular store needless to say they let me go for not being able to perform my task.. I have been on 4 more interviews as soon as they hear of my condition and limitations I do not get a call back. I did get a return email stating how they thought I was an excellent candidate but decided not to hire me in fear I would hurt myself.. I applied for disability by suggestion of my doctor they denied me so I've appealed but this time I have an attorney. As a single mother of 4 two grown and a 14 yr old boy and 12 yr old girl not being able to work and set a positive example for my kids is the hardest thing ever!! I've never been a quitter so I will continue to try and get better..

  • I too am a single Mom. My kids were a little older when I had my first surgery C4 - C7, in 2004. Was turned down for disability & went back to work way too soon. (3 months after surgery) I was a waitress, so if you don't work you don't get paid. Herniated more discs in 2007, reapplied & it went through. Tried every kind of back-to-work training program with no success. Became very depressed - I've worked since age 13. Went back in on a trauma last year central cord syndrome. Lost 40% use of my right hand, 20% of left, constant burning pain in arms, stabbing pain in neck & head. Laminectomy scheduled 2/28. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is be kind to yourself, you have been through so much. It really stinks when you can't support your family. Be persistent with SSD. Most everyone gets turned down the first time. Getting a lawyer really helps some people. I am so sorry this happened to you.
