Left hip and leg pain, please someone help me

I'm actively seeing a PM doctor, he doesn't believe in giving injections everywhere I hurt but for some reason I don't feel he believes a lot of the pain I tell him. I have from c2-t1 bulging discs indenting into the spinal, pinched nerve in c-3-c4 in which I got and occipital nerve block for the left side 2 days ago. MY lumbar is noted with mild arthritis, which is not severe enough for treatment. Although he did give me a trial epidural in my back which caused more sharp pains and less achiness and stiffness.

My biggest concern next is my left leg, I have what i'll call mild swelling all the way down to my ankle, very noticeable above the knee and it's a achy feeling all the time, other than when the hip and butt pain kicks in and it shoots down my leg. I've told the doctor and i get the feeling he just doesn't want to be bothered with that. He just wants to focus on my neck for now. He says 'I'm not going to stick you all over your body like and accupucture like most doctors will, I'm just going to give you steroid injection where I think more of your pain is coming from". Now I do appreciate my doctor somewhat looking out for me, but why not investigate to find out, or at least tell me what can cause this type of problem.

So I'm here on this informative site, looking for answers from my new set of friendly peers with whom have experienced or is presently having some of the same issues to informatively give me insight on what could this be? where could it come from?

your help is greatly appreciated!

  • What activites are you doing that result in the pain shooting down your leg? Whatever they are you need to stop doing them immidiately. For me it's sitting, when I sit my hip and leg pain goes from 1-2 pain scale to 7-8 pain scale. 2 week ago it was a 10. I have been doing bed rest, and light excercise with minimal sitting. Have you been recommended any other treatments than just injections? From what I have found about all of the injuries on this board, you are going to need to be proactive and seek your own aid as well. The doctor doesn't have a magic pill and unless you seem multiple doctors you will not get a well balanced idea of what you need as far as treatment. Are you doing any PT? If you are having swelling that should be addressed ASAP, might not be back related. That sounds like a trip to the ER. Good luck!
  • Hi Pm doctor will mostly deal in helping with the pain and meds for long term,
You need to see a spine specialist neuro or ortho or both,

Full MRI or ct scan has to be done look at everything. If you have neck and back issues they have to look at both full spine MRI,
They like to do 1 thing at a time as often insurance only wants to cover in bits , Pm doctor can be helping of course but often is a guessing game as injections here and there see if it helps find the pain generated from what level and such but injection is not 100 %

Best to work with spine specialist who works with the pain doctor as they can fax each other Emg results and make the best decision what to do ,

    Good luck hope this helps,

  • Joe, there are no particular movements or activities to enable me to pinpoint whats causing the worst pain. I can be lying down, sitting, walking, or just trying to do normal daily activities. Then the pain starts. I could go a few days at a time, then out of the blue, I'm limping around the pain in my hip starts, and sometimes goes from one hip to the other, then it's gone. But one thing for sure is bending or leaning over is definately a deal breaker. Standing for a period of time increases my pain.

Alex, I was thinking the same, I have no ideas why the doctors will not do a full MRI on me. I've seen 2 ortho, and a chiro. The chiro did x-rays, which showd only the lost of curvature in my neck and spondylitis in the thoractic area. The 1st ortho didn't even order and mri, just gave me a shot of cortisone, so I left him and went to the second ortho and he did an mri of the lumbar, it showd I had a little arthriitis so he told me to take motrin and he would see me in 6 months. So I found a pain management doctor, he did mri of cervical spine, this is when I found out about the bulging disk, protuding and pinching a nerve, he doesn't recommend surgery, but when i tell him of other pains i'm experiencing i guess it's not bad enough to look into. It's frustrating to me because some of my pain comes and goes to different areas of my body. I just dont know what else to do.

What else concerns me that if the xrays showed spondylitis in the mid back, then i'm curious to what a mri would show. I've been having some burning there on a daily bases, I told doctor about that, no response. So I guess I need to be looking up a neuro surgeon next?
