Steri strips off - Now what? Help Please!

Monday is my two week post-op date for ADCF surgery. Dr said leave steri strips on till they fell off. They came off today in shower. Not too pretty to say the least.

Since it's Saturday I couldn't call NS to ask "NOW WHAT?" Should I apply neosporin to incision, leave it in open air, vitamin E, anything, nothing, what?

Of course, I am still wearing my aspen collar 24x7, so it's protected somewhat. Just nervous about what I should or should not do. I haven't applied anything to it today

Don't see NS until 4 wks post-op. Your past experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • I had surgery march 13 on l4l5s1 and had steri strips down belly and back and I was told when it falls off ,just leave it open.It looked good though. If yours doesn't look good call your nurse and ask what you should do.I don't put anything on it. good luck kathy

I agree with Kathy. As long as the incision looks "ok" (nothing leaking, not looking an angry red or feeling warm) then it was just time for them to come off. Don't put anything on it. Keep using your collar as instructed. Call the doctor if anything doesn't look/feel right.

  • I agree too, leave it alone. I do have one suggestion. If you think there is a part that isn't fully closed, as soon as you get out of the shower use the hair dryer to blow it dry. That's the advice I've been given, and I have had a few surgeries where it took long to heal where they had to tie off one string and start the next, but I've never had an infection. Good luck! Hope you are feeling better each day and your recovery goes smoothly.
