I am a 28 y/o female. So after a year of struggling with sciatica and trying pretty much everything I decided to get microdiscectomy on my l4/l5 disc herniation. That disc was also highly degenerative so I don't know if that plays a part in this whole story. Anyway, After the microdiscectomy (beside the incision pain) I felt really good without any pain down my leg or my right buttock as I had prior. A lot of my pain before mainly felt like cramping and aching down my leg, Sometimes really sharply depending on how I moved.
So for about a week after surgery the incision pain was feeling pretty good and I didn't feel any pain down my leg. I was trying to not do too much and to try to walk up and down the street to get my muscles moving and reduce scar tissue. I did have an issue because I could not have a bowel movement until four days after surgery, where I was not passing gas and I needed to eventually get an enema to be able to get things moving. I attributed this to the general anesthesia and the pain medicine. I was straining pretty hard and and I was exhausted afterward so I was afraid that I did something to perhaps reherniate... But I could still walk okay.
I left the house for the first time a little over the first week after surgery to get pedicure and to get Mother's Day gifts. My sister drove me around. It was about a 2 hour excursion. That Saturday my sister was graduating from college so I wanted to be there. The graduation was three hours long but for most of the time I was standing or walking around I did not sit very much.
The next day in the morning I took my walk and I realized that I started to get cramping in my right buttock and my right leg just like I have before the surgery. I went home to lay down and I put an ice pack on my spine. It seemed to reduce the pain a bit and laying down felt best. I called the nurse and she said that it sounded like the nerves might be regenerating or waking up and that is why I might have the pain. She said as long as it was intermittent and not getting worse that it should be okay.
The next day the pain hadn't gone away the only way I could alleviate it was by laying down and taking medicine... i tried neural flossing hamstring stretch since i couldnt walk much, which felt good at the time but dont know if it made it worse. I had a rough night of sleep since my leg felt crampy and achy... Then today I tried to take a shower and just standing in the shower caused the same pain that I was having before I had the surgery ... shooting pain and cramping down my right leg. I tried to walk a little bit down the driveway to see if walking would help because just standing wasn't making it any better, but I was still getting the pain and cramping so I came back to lay down in bed. I called the nurse back and am waiting to hear back.
I am really afraid that I have reherniated the disc or something has gone wrong especially because that disc is degenerative. I'm really sad and scared because I have a two-year-old and I don't want to not be able to play with him or do normal things with him like give him a bath or put him in bed... I also know all this has added additional stress on my spouse and I am just ready to be pain free... And be a capable wife and mother. Please Help me with any insight you might have any words of encouragement would be helpfil to me as well as I'm stuck in bed alone today. Thank you.
